The 19th Hole

MURRAY DOWNS MENS

CAYLE McLean hit a career best shot in last Saturday’s competition against par off the “Gold” tees, by holing out on the 170-metre par 3 second hole.

A regular Saturday golfer, Mclean, who can hit a ball a very long way, but often quite erratically, achieved every golfer’s dream by scoring his first ever hole-in-one, on his second hole of the day.

Other nearest the pins for the day went to Paul Raudino on the 5th, Dale Rogers on the 11th and Steven Kerr on the 15th.

Chris Merritt (13) recorded the day’s best score of seven up to take out Division 2 ahead of Johannes Engelbrecht (16) who finished at three up.

Spencer McKenzie (5) was the best in Division 1 with four up and was closely followed by Stuart Holt (11) on three up – while Division 3 was taken out by Steven Kerr (18) with four up, ahead of Mick Kiley (17) at square with the card, which was the number required to get a ball.

Thursday, January 12 saw a Stableford competition across three divisions take place.

Greg Walker (37) took out Division 3 with the day’s best score of 42 points, ahead of Murray Conn (29) on 36 points. Steven Bulmer (15) was the best in Division 2 with 41 points and was followed by James Downing (17) on 36 points.

In Division 1, Dion Carmichael (12) led the way with 37 points, from Troy Kenny (5) from Rich River on 35 points.

Scores of 33 points and better were required in the ball run-down, while the nearest the pins were taken out by Ross Hastings on the 2nd, Malcolm Talbot on the 5th, Paul Livingston on the 11th and Ray Power on the 15th.

On Friday, January 13, there were enough players for a separate Men’s and Women’s competition in the nine-hole Stableford event.

The men’s section was taken out by Noah Starrs (18) with 23 points, ahead of Brenten Hogan (17) on 21 points, and Chris Warburton (19) was the best of the women with 20 points from Judy McMahon on 18 points.

Sunday, January 15 saw Seb Linssen (28) card the day’s best score of two up, taking out Division 2 ahead of Bailey Bowd (33) on one up, while in Division 1, Colin Mewburn (11) came out on top ahead of Tyler Aitken (10), with both players finishing at one up. Other players needed to be at least square with the card to get a ball, while the nearest the pins went to Bailey Codling on the 2nd, Sean Baumgurtel had two good shots on holes 5 and 15 and Charlie King was the best on the 11th.

On Tuesday, January 17, there were enough players for two divisions in the medley Stableford competition, with Natalie Horan (52) from Blackwood Golf Club, recording the best score of 41 points and taking out Division 2 ahead of the unlucky Daniel Thompson (20) who finished with 40 points.

Chris Smith (12) was the best in Division 1 on 38 points and was followed by Tony Ford (17) on 37 points. The nearest the pins went to Leigh Paynter on the 2nd, Leighton Dullard on the 11th and Neville Brady on the 15th, while 35 points was required to get a ball.

MURRAY DOWNS LADIES

JANETTE Tucker posted her best ever golf score on any course at Murray Downs Golf & Country Club on Wednesday. Cooler conditions greeted the 51 competitors and Janette, playing in Division 1 and off a handicap of 20, put together 42 Stableford points, which equated to a stroke score of 86. Her next outing on the golf course will see Janette playing off a handicap of 19, only one shot away from the elusive 18 mark, which is deemed the start of A grade.

The Division 2 winner was Deryn Pinney (34) with 38 points – this was after also posting a winning score of 35 points last week. Runners-up were Robyn Bett (26) with 37 points and Lois Heil (44) on 35 points.

Eilleen Willox 36, Barb Clark and Deb Watson (both 34) points led the ball pool, while Sue Davis had her radar working, collecting the nearest the pin prizes on the 2nd, 11th and 15th, with Mag Kiley successful on the 5th.

The hot weather diminished the numbers on the weekend. On Saturday, Rosanne Kava (45) one down won on a countback from Dione Heppell (10), with Sarah Clark and Anne Webb next best with three down. Phasinee Chaiyasit (23) one up and Libby Gregory (27) square were successful on Sunday.

Michelle Holt, Clarice Bourne and Kristy Gordon were the nearest the pin winners over the two days.
