MURRAY DOWNS MEN

DENNIS Moore and Andrew Guy have taken out the Murray Downs qualifying round for the Golf on the Murray, with 48 Stableford points in the 4BBB competition, which was played last Saturday.

They will now proceed to the final of the GOTM, which will be held in Corowa on Saturday July 1, where they will be joined by the runner pairing of Malcolm Talbot and Geoff Brasser, who also qualified for the GOTM final with 46 points.

Last Saturday’s competition was played in some rather unpleasant weather conditions, as reflected by several other scores recorded on the day.

The lucky shots on the par 3 holes were hit by Gary Slater on the 2nd, Dennis Moore on the 5th, his playing partner Andrew Guy on the 11th and Andrew Halligan on the 15th.

Sunday’s competition, was the Elegance Tiles by Conidi Tiles & Lighting 2-person Ambrose event, with a very good field of golfers taking part.

The winning pair of Andrew Gilchrist and Lance Stobaus came home with a net score of 63, just ahead of Cayle McLean and Josh Ewart who finished with net 63.5, who in turn were one shot ahead of the next best in Dave and Cody McClelland, and Paul and Caine Raundino, with both pairs finishing with net 64.5.

Jim De Gregorio, Graeme Cox, Brian White and Stuart Holt hit it the closest on the par 3 holes of 2, 5, 11 and 15 respectively.

The best women’s pairing was Dione Heppell and Tanya Thornson with 63.75 net, who were well ahead of the next best in Val Hedwards and Anne Webb who finished with 68.25 net.

Last Thursday’s competition was a Stableford event, played in three divisions, with Noah Starrs recording the day’s best score with an excellent 44 points, from his handicap of 15, to take out division 1, from Stuart Holt (11) who finished with 41 points.

Terry McEwan (20) got the nod in his favour for division 2 honours, over Tynan Perry (18) when both players finished with 39 points apiece.

In division 3, it was taken out by Alister McBain (24) with 40 points from Rob West (24) who finished with 36 points.

On Tuesday, a good-sized field of midweek golfers took part in the medley competition against par, in two divisions, where a visitor from Link Shell Coves in Luke McGregor (13) recorded the day’s best score of +4, to take out division 1 from Ross Hastings (7) on +1.

Wendy Talbot (40) was the best in division 2 with +3, from David Bourne (24) at square. Other players required scores of at least -1 to be eligible for a ball, while the NTPs went to Donald Jeffery (Royal Canberra) on the 2nd, Darryl Domaille on the 5th, Tynan Perry on the 11th and Corey Daniels on the 15th.

This Sunday is the holding of the 2023 River Murray Challenge, a mixed 4BBB Stableford competition between Murray Downs and Rich River clubs at Murray Downs.

The event starts with a two-course dinner at Murray Downs on Saturday evening, followed by the shotgun start event on Sunday at noon.

Murray Downs are the current shield holders and will be certainly striving to hold onto it for at least another 12 months.

The shield winner is achieved by adding all of the scores from each team and dividing by the number of pairs representing each club.

MURRAY DOWNS LADIES

FORTY pairs of women teed off in the Stableford four ball at MDG&CC on Wednesday. This event has been sponsored by LJ Hooker Swan Hill for many years and the number of entries bore testament to its popularity.

Faye Palmer and new golfer Kaye McAlpine were the most successful pair with a score of 45 points. They were followed by Mandy Amezdroz and Kerry McDonald on 43 points, who claimed second place on a countback from Bev Holt and Marg Moore.

Di Atkin and Jenny Lynas, and Suzanne Napier and Lisa Brady, scored 42 points to lead the ball rundown.

Paula Pickert took out two nearest the pin prizes, namely the 5th hole and the 11th where she collected the jackpot. Other NTP winners were Jan Butcher and Chris Warburton.

Showery weather reduced Saturday’s field with Carol Wiseman (25) 32 points leading a small band of intrepid golfers.

VETERANS GOLF

TWENTY-four Veteran golfers entered the Stableford event at Kerang on Tuesday, a beautiful sunny autumn day, but scores were not as good as the day (sorry golfers).
