The 19th Hole

MURRAY DOWNS MENS

AS far as 4BBB Stableford competitions go at Murray Downs, a score in the mid to high-40s would normally be good enough to win, but this wasn’t the case last Saturday.

Quenten Graham and Geoff Brasser combined for a magnificent score of 52 points, to not only be the best score of the day, but score four points better than the next best score of 48 points, which was submitted by Ian Read and Brian Elliott.

No doubt the handicapper will have a very close look at their scorecard.

As mentioned earlier, this score of 48 points would normally be good enough to win the competition, but they had to settle for the runners-up prize, which in turn was one shot better than the 47 handed in by Hugh Thompson and Charlie King.

Scores of 43 and better were required to be in the ball hunt, while nearest the pins were taken out by Rob West on the 2nd, Stuart McLean on the 5th, Charlie King on the 11th and Ben Smith on the 15th.

Sunday’s competition was a singles Stableford event, played over two divisions on a rather cold autumn day.

Jason Perry (15) found the conditions to his liking, recording the day’s best score of 39 points to be the best in Division 1, ahead of Steven Bulmer (10), who finished with 32 points.

Luke Hogan (40) scored 38 points, to take out Division 2 ahead of the in-form Geoff Brasser (35) on 34 points.

Conditions must have been quiet tough, as the ball rundown went to as low as 31 points, while Andrew Halligan, Darryl Domaille, Steve Emberson and Justin Condely hit the lucky shots to the par 3 holes.

Last Thursday’s competition was against par across two divisions, with Justin Thompson (10) having a day out, recording the best score of four up and take out Division 1 from Dean Scott (9) at one up.

Rick Austerberry (22) was the best in Division 2 at square with the card, ahead of Tony Wilson (26) who finished one down.

Scores of three down and better were required to get a ball, while the nearest the pins went to Brian Elliott, Mark Warren and Tony McDonald.

On Tuesday this week, a field of 30 golfers took part in a medley Stableford competition, with Ian Gammon (26) claiming the win with a score of 37 points, just ahead of Ron Munro (19) with 36.

The next best of 32 points was recorded by Michael Corridan (26), Brenda Miller (31), Darryl Domaille, Mark Warren and Tony Wilson, with each player receiving a ball for their efforts.

This Saturday will be the third round of the Swan Hill Wholesalers Premier League competition, which will see the Royal Goats up against Presidents Cup, Royal Capri taking on The Sticky Bandits, the Birdies playing the Mallee Bulls, Quo Vadis Gladiators facing off against Mavericks, and the final match will be between The Wannabees and Bushrangers.

After the first two rounds, the Quo Vadis Gladiators, Royal Goat Trackers and Bushrangers each have two wins and are sharing top spot on the ladder.

They are closely followed by the Mallee Bulls, Wannabees, Mavericks and Birdies all with one win, while the Presidents Cup, Royal Capri and last season’s premiers Sticky Bandits are still to trouble the scorers.

This Sunday is a mixed Chapman event, which is also the qualifying round of the annual mixed knockout competition, with the top eight pairs going into the knockout rounds.
