MURRAY DOWNS MENS

THERE were some unexpected results in last Saturday’s Swan Hill Wholesalers Premier League matches.

As a double-header round, two matches were played on the one day, with the Royal Goat Trackers moving to the top of the ladder after achieving a draw against last-placed Sticky Bandits and a win against an under-manned Mallee Bulls.

The Presidents Cup mob recorded their first points for the season with two wins, defeating the Mallee Bulls and Bushrangers.

In other matches, Quo Vadis Gladiators went down to two all-women teams, Wannabees and Birdies, while Royal Capri also recorded two wins.

Round 4 results: Royal Goats 97 drew Sticky Bandits 97, Presidents Cup 93 d Mallee Bulls 87, Royal Capri 112 d Mavericks 99, Birdies 103 d Bushrangers 91, Wannabees 102 d Gladiators 101.

The ladder has had some major changes, with Royal Goats having moved to the top on 18 points, followed by the Bushrangers, Birdies, Royal Capri and Mavericks all with 12 points.

With eight points each are Gladiators, Capri, President’s Cup and Bulls, with the Bandits holding up the ladder with their two points.

The next round is scheduled to be played on June 17.

In the daily competition, Geoff Brasser (35) continued his recent purple patch by recording the day’s best score of 41 points, taking out Division 3 from Mick Burns (22) on 36 points.

Divisions 1 and 2 were decided by the countback system, with Neville Brady (2) coming out on top in Division 1 ahead of Brenton Cruickshank (7), with both players finishing on 37 points, while Division 2 went to Malcolm Talbot (18) ahead of Roger Walker (18), with both players recording 36 points apiece.

The ball run-down went down to scores of 33 points, while the nearest the pins were shot by Rob Merrett on the 2nd, Jonny Hirst on the 5th, Leigh Paynter on the 11th and Ken Gregory on the 15th, while Barb Clark knocked off the jackpot on the 11th hole.

Sunday’s competition was a four-person Ambrose event, with a very good Sunday field of golfers (108) taking part.

The winning team consisted of Rob Forster and Chris, Jamie and Adrian Knee.

Playing from a combined handicap of 12.38, they shot a score of 64 off the beater for a net score of 51.62, to take out the event ahead of Joel Travaglia, Mal Devereux, Gary Blencowe and Rick Pickering (10.63) with a net 53.37.

Finishing third was Jonny Hirst, Brenton and Daniel Cruickshank and Tristan Ramadge (3.25) with a net 55.75.

Scores of at least 57.25 were required to get a ball, while the nearest the pins went to Brenton Cruickshank on the 5th, Steve Emberson on the 11th and Col Hedwards on the 15th.

Last Thursday’s competition was against par in three divisions, with Malcolm Talbot (18) recording the best score of four up to take out Division 2 ahead of Joe Morrison (23) on two up.

Ken Gregory (8) was the best in Division 1 with three up, followed by Colin Mewburn (11) with one up, while in Division 3, Tony Wilson was best (25) at two up, ahead of Geoff McDonald (33) at one up.

The ball run-down was red-hot as scores of at least one down were required to be in the running.

Mark Warren hit two very good shots into holes 2 and 11, claiming the jackpot on the 11th, while Ray Power was the closest on the 5th and Laurie Shipsides on the 15th.

Tuesday’s competition was against par, with Oliver Rohde (8) picking up the main prize by finishing square with the card, ahead of Graeme Mathiske (14), on countback.

Steve Matthews also finished square, but led the ball run-down, which went down to scores of -2.

Howard Rosewarne and Graeme Mathiske picked up the two nearest the pins on offer on holes 2 and 11.

With the 2023 Golden Putter now less than four weeks away, some late entries will be accepted, with forms available in the breezeway.


MURRAY DOWNS LADIES

THE 49 women who competed in the Stableford event at Murray Downs on Wednesday enjoyed cool but benign conditions.

Lois Tippett, fresh from her D Grade championship win, put together an amazing 45 points from her 35 handicap to post the best score of the day and win the Division 2 voucher, while the runner-up was new golfer Jo Dillon (47) with a personal best score of 42 points.

In Division 1, Maralyn Morrison (25) scored 35 points and Lois Carnie (18) 34 points were successful.

Sharnee Rogers (44) is another new golfer and scored 40 points to lead the ball rundown, while other ball winners were Cassie Barnett, Lyn Beasy, Di Nalder, Kerry McDonald, Eilleen Willox and Tracy Hooper.

Sharnee Rogers added to her prize list with two nearest the pins, while Carol Wiseman collected the jackpot on the 11th and Jenny Lynas the 15th.

Lisa Brady (25), 38 points, won Saturday’s competition by the barest of margins, ahead of Sally Fearn (46).

Sheila Beard and Avis Shipsides, both with 36 points, led the ball pool from Nadine Cox and Jill McIndoe, both on 35 points.

Robyn Bett won the nearest the pin on the 2nd, with Barb Clark collecting the jackpot on the 11th.


LAKESIDE

WEEK two of club championships.

Winner of the day and the Clark’s voucher was Jean Youl (21) with a 74 net, runner-up was Deanne Free (29) 75 net, ball rundown winner Lois Heil.

Nearest the pin winners – 3rd Lake Boga Cafe was Mandy Male, 12th HEC was Jean Youl and 18th J. Foster was Deanne Free.


LALBERT

ON Sunday, May 28, the club held a Stableford event, which Maurice Meehan won with a fine 44 points, ahead of Peter Harley on 41 points.

In the nine-hole juniors, Kel Parsons won the scratch event with 52 and Blake Shepherd the handicap with net 36.

The club championships start on June 3 and will run over four weeks, with the final round on June 24.
