MURRAY DOWNS MEN

THE reigning Murray Downs club champion James McLean has taken out the June monthly medal after shooting a one-under-par round of 71, from his daily handicap of two, finishing with a net score of 69 and taking out the coveted prize.

McLean has now qualified for the Medal of Medallists final, which will be played on Saturday, July 1, and will join fellow monthly medal winners over the 2022-23 season – Dale Rogers (July), Ian Read (August), Grant McNees (September), Gary Slater (October), Dave Hogan (November and February), James Downing (December), Chris Wilson (January), Dale Leiper (March), Tony Ford (April) and Jason Baird (May) – to battle for the title.

Dean Laws (2) from the Box Hill Golf Club took out Division 1, with net 72, ahead of Jorgen Leschke (9) at 74 net.

Chris Conlan (17) was the best in Division 2, with a net 71, just ahead of Sam Davis (15) on net 72. In Division 3, the best was Joey Higgins (29) with 70 net, ahead of Kain Domaille (20) on 72 net.

Scores of net 75 and better were required to get a ball, while Fred Fletcher had a very good shot into the 2nd green to claim the first nearest the pin, with Ross Hastings closest on the 5th, Steve Bulmer winning the jackpot on the 11th and James McLean on the 15th.

Sunday’s Stableford competition was played in near-perfect conditions over two divisions, with Luke Rodgers (15) recording the day’s best score of 41 points and taking out Division 1 ahead of Rob Forester (7) on 40 points.

Tom O’Halloran (20) was the best in Division 2 with 39 points, just ahead of the captain, Mick Kiley (19), who finished with 38 points.

Other players required at least 34 points to be in the ball run-down, while the nearest-the-pins went to Steve Emberson on the 2nd, Mick Kiley on the 5th, Grant Ford on the 11th and Brian Hinton on the 15th.

A good-sized field of golfers took part in last Thursday’s Stableford competition, allowing for three divisions.

The best score of the day was recorded by Mark Warren (11), 42 points, taking out Division 1 ahead of Jorgen Leschke (8) with 38 points.

Sam Lucas (17) from Warrnambool was declared the best in Division 2 by way of the countback system, over Chris Fordham (17), with both players finishing on 37 points apiece. In Division 3, the best was Steve Matthews (25) with 37 points, ahead of Joey Higgins (28) on 35 points.

John Tripodi led the ball run-down with his 37 points, which went down to scores of 34.

The nearest-the-pins went to Ray Power, Laurie Shipsides, Sean Baumgurtel and Glenn Palmer (Victoria Police Golf Club), on holes 2, 5, 11 and 15 respectively.

On Tuesday, a small field of very keen golfers played a Stableford event in the drizzly conditions, with Graeme McMillan (26) the best with 34 points, ahead of Ron Munro (16) also on 34 points and Graeme Mathiske (11) with 33 points.

ON Sunday the Lalbert Golf Club held the first round of the club championships, which was combined with a Stableford event.

In the men’s event, Doug Meehan had the best scratch score with 78, ahead of Maurice Meehan on 83 and Dave Doolan on 85.

In the Stableford, Maurice Meehan won with 35 points on a countback from Doug Meehan.

In the ladies’ event, Danika Meehan had the best scratch score with 102, ahead of Karen McKissack on 105. In the Stableford competition, Danika won with 36 points, ahead of Caitlin McKissack on 31, while the nearest the pin was won by Dave Doolan.
