MURRAY DOWNS MENS

EMERGING golfer Noah Sherlock had a day out in last Saturday’s competition against par, off the gold tee markers at the Murray Downs Golf & Country Club.

Twenty-year-old Sherlock, playing from his handicap of 43, compiled a score of 6 up to record the day’s best score and take out Division 3, ahead of Anthony Carroll (19), who had to be satisfied with the runners up prize in this division, with his score of 5 up.

Andrew Halligan (15) also recorded an impressive score of 5 up, to take out Division 2, from Tony Ford (16) who finished at 4 up.

Division 1 went the way of Ross Hastings (8) with a score of 1 up, with Peter Hayes (7) from Horsham, finishing square with the card just behind.

There were some very unlucky scores in the ball run down, which went down to scores of square and better. Jackson Quirk had two very lucky shots on holes 11 and 15 and was closest to the pin on both holes, while Ian Johannsen won the nearest the pin on the second and Daniel Cruickshank claimed the win on the fifth.

Last Thursday’s competition was a 4BBB-Stableford event, with the win being taken out by the pairing of Darryl Domaille and Tony McDonald, who finished with 45 points.

The next best was the pairng of Murray Conn and Ritchie Merritt on 44 points, with Conn and Merritt getting the nod over Ian Read and Laurie Shipsides, who finished with the same score.

At least 41 points were required to get a ball, while the nearest the pins went the way of Malcolm Talbot on the second, Graeme Mathiske on the fifth and Justin Thompson on holes 11 and 15.

Sunday’s event was the annual PGA Scramble, played under a 4-person Ambrose format, with 108 players taking part, with the two best teams going through to the regional final for an opportunity to win their way into the national final. Venues and dates for these two finals still to be confirmed.

The winning team consisted of Leigh Evans, Matthew Quaife, Gary Steinman and Tony Miceli, who played with a combined handicap of 10.75.

Their combination shot a gross score of 68 and finished with a nett score of 57.25, getting over the line by way of the count-back system, with Thomas Curnow, Thomas Holman, Jake Gascoyne and Cade Mueller Kyabram Parkland finishing with 66 off the beater for their nett score of 57.25.

Finishing third with a nett score of 58 was the team of Luke Hogan, Jason Perry, Scott Mathiske and Matt Harrop.

A small field of golfers took part in Tuesday’s stableford competition, which saw Howard Rosewarne (30) record the day’s best score of 38, finishing ahead of Rob O’Brien (21) with 36 points, Ross Hastings with 35 points and Mark Warren with 34 points, with each playing receiving a ball for their efforts.

Our events that are coming up include the Betta Home Living 4BBB Stableford competition for both men and women on Sunday, August 13.

This event will be followed by the 36-hole 2-person Ambrose Challenge over the weekend of Saturday, August 26 and Sunday, August 27 for both men and women, with prizes for the best scratch and nett scores in both sections.
