MURRAY DOWNS MENS

HIGH scores were the order of the day in last Thursday’s Stableford competition at Murray Downs Golf & Country Club.

This was no more evident than in Division 2, where Darian Male (15) from Donald and Lucas Free (20) both recordied 44 points apiece, Male coming out on top by the countback system.

Mitchell Uhlhorn (28) also recorded a very good score of 41 points to be the best in Division 3, ahead of Greg Daniels (25) who finished with 40 points.

In Division 1, the good scores continued, with Mitchell Croft (11) coming out on top with 39 points, ahead of Chris Merritt (14) with 38.

Roger Walker, 41 points, and Greg Kerr, 40 points, led the ball rundown, which went down to scores of 36 points, while the nearest the pins were won by Stuart Holt on the 2nd, James Downing on the 5th and 15th and Leigh Paynter on the 11th.

A good-sized field on AFL grand final day took part in the Stableford competition, playing from the black tee markers and the vast majority of players hitting off in the morning field.

The day’s best score came from Division 2 player in Steven Bulmer (14) with 37 points and was followed by Daniel Thompson (17) from Lakeside with 32 points.

Lleyton McLean (11) was the best in Division 1 with 36 points, ahead of Noah Starrs (11) on 34 points while in Division 3, the best was Luke Phelan (27) with 36 points, ahead of Tom Wilkins (36) on 35 points.

Other players required at least 31 points to be in the ball hunt, while Lleyton McLean topped off a good day by also claiming the nearest the pin on the second hole, as did Noah Starrs on the 11th and Chris Merritt on the 15th.

Steven Bulmer (13) completed a good weekend of golf by recording 43 points in Sunday’s competition, to win the event ahead of Tim Free (15) who finished with 37 points.

To get a ball, other players required a score of at least 35 points, while Jorgen Leschke and Ash Free picked up the two nearest the pins on offer on holes 2 and 11 respectively.

On Tuesday this week and before the wet weather set in, Neville Brady (4) recorded 39 points to get the chocolates, ahead of Geoff McDonald (34) who also finished with 39 points.

Tori Ficarra, 36 points, and Robyn Bett, 35 points, led the ball competition, which went to scores of 29 points and above, while Ian Johansen on the fifth and Neville Brady on the 15th claimed the nearest the pins on offer.

MURRAY DOWNS LADIES

ENJOYING the opening day of the three-day Classic tournament at Murray Downs Golf & Country Club on Wednesday were 122 women from more than 25 visiting clubs.

More than 40mm of rain was recorded on Tuesday, but because of the excellent drainage on the course, scores were not particularly impacted.

In the A Grade competition, local Lynne Bishop kept up her good form to score 36 points from her 12 handicap, to finish ahead of Barham Golf Club member Kate Bartels (15) with 35 points.

Local golfers Suzanne Napier (26) and Jeanette Tucker (23) both scored 38 points, with the former collecting the main B Grade prize on count back.

Another local was successful in C Grade, with Nadine Cox (41) with 37 points, finishing ahead of Frances Dalton (39, Port Fairy Golf Club) on 36 points.

Lynne Bishop added to her bounty with two nearest the pin prizes, with the others going to visitors Lisa Hyne and Kerry Bond.

Gaye Legudi (31) with 34 points was the winner of Saturday’s competition, but only after she survived a count back from West Aviat WA golf club member Marion Hutch (16).

Jenice Krahnert collected a golf ball with 32 points, while Kristy Gordon and Sarah Clark won the nearest the pin prizes.

The countback system was again required to decide Sunday’s winner, with Janelle Hogan (25) scoring 41 points and being successful ahead of Olive Spitty (1), with Olive’s score equating to a four under par 68.
