Watts wins Classic title

MURRAY Downs golfer Jo Watts has claimed the title of Classic Amateur Champion at Murray Downs Golf & Country Club’s 28th annual Women’s Classic tournament.

Watts claimed victory last Thursday afternoon with a scratch score of 82, ahead of Rosanna Golf Club’s Lynnette Rose, who finished three shots back with a round of 85.

There were 322 competitors taking part across the three-day tournament, which began last Wednesday with a stableford event.

Another local golfer took the main prize on Wednesday, with Lynne Bishop scoring 36 points from her handicap of 12 to claim victory in the A grade competition, with Barham Golf Club member Kate Bartels (15) finishing runner up with 35 points.

In the B grade competition, Suzanne Napier (26) and Jeanette Tucker (23) both scored 38 points, with Napier collecting the main prize via countback, while Nadine Cox (41) finished with 37 points to claim victory in the C grade competition, ahead of Port Fairy golfer Frances Dalton (39) on 36 points.

The prestigious Murray Downs Bowl was held in conjunction with Thursday’s Murray Downs Classic Amateur tournament, with the team from Rosanna declared winners.

The tournament saw golfers from 23 clubs across Victoria descend on Swan Hill for the event, with competitors travelling from as far away Port Fairy, Gisborne and Portarlington.

On the final day, Murray Downs golfer Lyn Lawry scored a hole in one on the 11th hole.

The event finished with a 4BBB stableford event, with a total of 114 players taking part.
