MURRAY DOWNS MEN’S

Following the men’s annual general meeting, which was held on Monday evening, Mick Kiley has stepped down as captain after four years and has handed the reins over to James McLean.

Luke Merritt has taken on the role of vice-captain, with Ken Gregory continuing as secretary and Ben Smith the handicappers’ duties.

New committee members that were elected unopposed are Ben Smith and Troy Gnitecki for a two-year term.

Rob Merrett has stepped away from the committee after serving as the club’s handicapper for the past 29 years.

Many thanks to Rob for your involvement over such a long period, you can now enjoy your golf a lot more without the distractions.

On the golfing side, last Saturday’s competition was a stableford event that was played over three divisions.

The best in Division 1 was Jorgen Leschke, who compiled 40 points from his six handicap, ahead of Mark Warren (8) with 38 points.

Chris Merritt (13) also shot 40 points, to be the best in Division 2, ahead of Dale Rogers (12) with 37 points, while in Division 3, Sam Rovere (17) was the best with 39 points, ahead of Gerard Moloney (20) on 36 points.

Malcolm Talbot led the ball run-down with his 37 points, which went down to scores of 34 and better, while Glenn Palmer on the 2nd, Malcolm Talbot on the 5th, Daniel Cruickshank on the 15th all won the nearest the pins, with Ross Kenyon, Rob Merrett and James McLean all hitting it inside the magical meter mark on the 11th to share the jackpot, with Merrett being the closest at 48cm.

On Sunday, it was again a stableford competition, which saw Martin Huges (18) record the day’s best score of 40 points, to win Division 1 ahead of Andrew Spitty (3) with 39 points.

The best in Division 2 was Matthew Battenally (35) on 39 points, who finished just ahead of Zach Haywood (34) on 38 points.

Other players required at least 35 points to win a ball, while the nearest the pins were taken out by Brad Cockfield on the 2nd, Rob Forster on the 5th and Adrian Knee on the 15th.

Surprisingly, nobody recorded a shot on the shortest hole on the course, the 11th.

The best score from last Thursday’s competition came out of Division 1 and was recorded by Neville Brady (4), who showed glimpses of his best form with 38 points.

The runner up in this division, with 37 points, was Greg Earle, who is playing from a handicap of eight.

Riley Graham (17) was the best in Division 2 with 37 points, ahead of Greg Weybury (21) on 35 points, while in Division 3, Gordon Parsons (27) came out on top with 36 points, ahead of Tony Wilson (28) with 32 points.

The ball run down went to as low as 31 points, while the nearest the pins were won by Sam Rovere on the 2nd, Ross Hastings on the 5th, Wayne Wisby on the 11th and Glenn Plamer on the 15th.

And then on Tuesday of this week, Greg Kerr (38) recorded his best score since taking up golf only a short time ago, with his 39 points winning Division 2, ahead of Geoff Kerr (22) from Axedale on 35 points.

Mark Burns (16) was the best in Division 1 with 36 points, ahead of another Axedale visitor in Steven Lee (12) on 34 points.

Michael Corridan led the ball competition with 34 points, which went down to scores of 32, while Ross Hastings and Mark Warren collected the nearest the pins on holes 2 and 11 respectively.

A reminder to all golfers that the Swan Hill Windows & Kitchens/TASCO Petroleum 9-hole summer competition commenced this week, with entries still open.

The weekly competition runs from Monday through to Sunday, with the best individual score each week receiving a $50 TASCO Petroleum voucher.


MURRAY DOWNS LADIES

The presentation of yearly trophies and ladies annual general meeting was held on Wednesday, with the title of golfer of the year going to Lois Carnie, who has had a very consistent year.

Maree Thurwood won the Medal of Medallist play off, while Lynne Bishop took out the Donnington Cup final, Colleen Roberts collected the Holt’s Spring Brooch prize and Sally Fearn was successful in the Anniversary Cup competition.

Sheila Beard won the coveted putting competition trophy and also took home the LJ Hooker Saturday Star prize.

Val Hedwards won the singles knockout, while the fourball knockout winners were Lynne Bishop and Barb Cadd.

In her report, Mag Kiley thanked all the members for their support during the year, with the committee to remain the same for next year.

The daily competition was a stableford event on the Downs course, with handicaps adjusted accordingly for the shortened conditions.

Lois Carnie (12), Pam Blohm (23) and Joan Foster (28) all scored 38 points to win the three divisions, with the runners up being Lisa Brady (19) on 37 points, Michelle Holt (29) on 36 points and Barb Upton (27) on 34 points.

Eilleen Willox and Colleen Roberts both scored 36 points to lead the ball pool, while Ruth McAlister, Maralyn Morrison, Julie Overall and Maree Thurwood were successful in winning the nearest the pins.

Deb Watson (41) scored 41 points to win Saturday’s competition, ahead of Kristy Gordon (15) on 38 points and Sarah Clark (21), Nadine Cox (39) and Olive Spitty (0) leading a small field on Saturday.
