THE first week of the Swan Hill Windows & Kitchens/TASCO Petroleum 9-hole summer competition has been completed, with eight teams of four players currently entered.

Results from week one sees Marlz Faves, consisting of Cayle McLean, Matt Collins, Luke Merritt and Lleyton McLean on top with 59 points, and are one point ahead of The President’s Men, Col Hedwards, John Webb, Rob Merrett and Chris Merritt.

The next best, with 52 points apiece, are Cadd Magic, which consists of Barb Cadd, Lyn Merrett, Anne Webb and Val Hedwards, PLC’S, who are Pam Austerberry, Claire Nalder-Martin, Colleen Roberts and Lisa Brady as well as Quo Vadis Gladiators, which is John Tripodi, Sean Baumgurtel, Andrew Cameron and Luke Rodgers.

The first of the $50 TASCO Petroleum vouchers went to Cayle McLean, who compiled 21 points, just pipping Mick Kiley by way of the count-back system.

Entries are still open for anybody wishing to compete in the competition.

It was a stableford competition that was played across three divisions last Saturday, with Lleyton McLean (9) not only collecting the major prize on offer, but also Division 1 honours, with his 40 points.

The runner up in this division was Grant Ford (10) with 38 points, while Brenten Hogan (18) was the best in Division 2, with 39 points, just ahead of Gary Bailey (15) with 37 points.

In Division 3, the best score was shot by Gerard Moloney (21) with 37 points, ahead of Sebastian Parseghian (27) on 36 points.

Other players required at least 34 points to be eligible for a ball, while the nearest the pins were won by Brenten Hogan on holes 2 and 5, Mark Warren on hole 15, and Paul Bethune on the 11th, which also saw him take away the jackpot of $105 with a shot to 75cm.

On Sunday, the men played from the shorter gold tee blocks, which saw Anthony Carroll (18) get the win with a score of 40 points, taking out Division 2 ahead of Leigh Evans (13) with 35 points.

Harry Simpson (6), also recorded 40 points, to be the best in Division 1, ahead of Daniel Cruickshank (3), who finished on 38 points, while in Division 3, the count-back system again came into play to separate Ben Sartori (27) and Sebastian Parseghian (25) when both players came in with scores of 37 points, with Sartori coming out on top.

Jonny Hirst led the ball run-down with his 37 points, which went down to as low as 34 points, while the nearest the pins were won by Rob Forester on the 2nd, Steven Emberson on 5th and Tony Miceli on the 15th.

Gary Hughes (25) recorded the day’s best score of 41 points, from the blue tees in last Thursday’s competition, taking out Division 3 ahead of Geoff McDonald (33) on 38 points.

Division 2 went to Wayne Such (22) with 39 points, who finished just in front of Michael Pickert (23) on 38, while in Division 1, Dale Rogers (13) was the best with 40 points, just ahead of Paul Bethune (12) on 39 points.

Thirty-three points was the mark required to get a ball, while the nearest the pins went to Fred Fletcher on the 2nd, Peter Stanbrook on the 5th, David Bourne on the 11th and Chris Merritt on the 15th.

Finally, on Tuesday this week, Luke Rodgers (10) took out the main prize with 39 points, ahead of Ben Sartori (28) with 38 points.

Greg Weybury (37), Tony Ford (37), Oscar Gale (36), Zac Threadgold (35) and Ken Veale (35) all got a ball for their efforts, with Zac Threadgold collecting the only nearest the pin on offer on the 11th hole.

This weekend will be a very busy one, with shotgun starts on both days for the Mal Woolhouse Memorial Day, 18-hole stroke event on Saturday and the A-Grade Sheds by Andy Graham day on Sunday, which is a 3-person Ambrose event.

These two events are filling very quickly and will attract capacity fields, so if you wish to play on either day, please get your entry in as soon as possible.

Just a reminder to all male golfers that the first two rounds of the Men’s 2023 Club Championships start next weekend on November 4-5, with the final two rounds to be played on the following weekend of November 11 and 12.

The top four players in each division following the third round will be seeded to play together in the final round, with the trophy presentations to all division champions to follow the final round on Sunday, November 12.
