MURRAY DOWNS MEN

LAST Saturday saw the second running of the Mal Woolhouse Memorial Cup held at the Murray Downs Golf & Country Club.

The format was a stoke event, played from the true black tee markers in rather blustery conditions.

The winner of the Mal Woolhouse Memorial Cup for 2023 is Zachary Haywood (32) with a net score of 69, with Ken Gregory (8) at net 70 finishing as runner up, just ahead of Carol Wiseman (26) by way of the countback system.

Wiseman recorded the best score from the women’s section with her net 70, just beating Kristy Gordon (15) by way of the countback system.

In the men’s section, Ken Gregory (8) was the winner of Division 1 with his net 70 score, ahead of Andrew Spitty (2) at an even 72 and Fred Fletcher (13) on net 73.

Geoff Frame (21) took out Division 2 honours with a net 73 by way of the countback system from Allen Woolstencroft (16) and Steve Kerr (21),

In Division 3, it was Haywood (32) with the best score with his net 69, followed by Gerard Moloney (22) and Rob Merrett (22) both with 71.

The Junior Champion was won by Olive Spitty (0) with a net 74, while the nearest the pins went to Colin Balcam on the 2nd, Steve Kerr on the 5th, Dale Smith on the 11th and Rob Merrett on the 15th.

Sunday’s competition was the A-Grade Sheds by Andy Graham day in a three-person Ambrose format.

A capacity field assembled for this very popular day, when the team of Tristan Ramadge, Brenton Cruickshank and Daniel Cruickshank took out the event with a very good score of net 56.

The runner-up, with a score of 57.833, was the team of Luke Merritt, Cayle McLean and Grant McNees, who were followed by Mark Reed, Adam Laughlin and Tony Haley with 58.167.

In fourth position, with 58.833, were Andrew Gilchrist, Graeme Cox and Rick Rundel-Gordon, followed by Thomson Dow, Charlie King and Riley Daniels on 60 in fifth position, then Glenn Palmer, Mick Kiley and Brett Farlie on 60.667 in sixth, with each player receiving a sleeve of balls for their efforts.

The nearest the pins went to Wayne Wisby, Harry Simpson, Hugh Thompson and David Boure on the par-three holes.

Last Thursday’s competition was against par and was played across two divisions, which saw John Tripodi awarded the day’s major prize by way of the countback system.

His score of +3, from his daily handicap of 15, was the best in Division 1, ahead of Doug Grant (8) at +1, while Ron Munro (18) had to satisfied with being the best in Division 2, also with a score of +3, with the runner-up being Barry Caccianiga (31) with +1, also by way of a countback.

Rob Hinton (19) led the ball rundown with +1, which went down to scores of -1, while the nearest the pins were taken out by Jonathon Hirst on the 2nd, Dale Rogers on the 5th and Mark Warren on the 15th.

A medley Stableford competition was played on Tuesday, when Wendy Talbot (41) took out the event with 41 points, ahead of Paul Bethune (11) on 37 points. Greg Weybury and Rob O’Brien collected the nearest the pins on holes 2 and 11.

After week two of the Swan Hill Windows & Kitchens/TASCO Petroleum nine-hole summer competition, team Presidents Men moved to the top of the ladder with 118 points. They were followed by Marlz Faves on 116, Cadd Magic on 109 and the Crusaders on 102.

The best score of the week and picking up a $50 TASCO voucher, with 23 points, was from Rob Merrett.

Cayle McLean had another good round of 22 points, followed by John Webb and Claire Nalder-Martin with 20 points each.

A reminder to all male golfers, the 2023 Murray Downs Men’s Club Championships start this weekend, with rounds one and two being played on Saturday and Sunday, ending with rounds three and four next weekend.


MURRAY DOWNS LADIES

LYNNE Bishop has played golf at the Murray Downs Golf & Country Club for 19 years, having served on the committee, had a two-year term as captain and been a gifted organiser of social events in that time.

On Wednesday, she was rewarded by taking out her first Monthly Medal at the club, with a score of 69 net from her handicap of 11.

This win has capped off a stellar year for Lynne, having reduced her handicap by six shots, along with winning the Donnington Cup and featuring in the daily winners lists on several occasions.

The runner-up in Division 1 was Maralyn Morrison (24) who shot a very good 70, and Barb Cadd (29) 71 and Tina King (34) 72 were the successful competitors in Division 2.

The ball rundown was led by Robyn Bett with 71, and Shelley Wilkins and Clare Nalder-Martin both with 72, while Tracy Hooper, Di Martin, Lynne Bishop, Marie Cruickshank and Kathy Parkinson all collected the nearest the pin prizes.

Winner: Ros Jennings 99-34-65.

Runner-up: Janet Brauer (on countback from Leonie Lambert).

Nearest the pin 5/14: Lisa Zanker.
