MURRAY DOWNS MEN

THURSDAY’S men’s Stableford competition had more than 70 players take to the course, where scoring continued to be strong, Terry McEwan registering the best score of the day with 42 points.

The A Grade winner was Dale Rogers, who scored well to win with 37 points on a countback ahead of Ryan McLean, who also had 37 points.

The B Grade runner-up was Sam Rovere, who could consider himself a little unlucky to finish second with 41 points, while the C Grade winner was Rob O’Brien with 39 points, Oscar Gale taking out second place with 37 points on a countback.

The nearest the pins were won by Robert Burns (2nd), Malcolm Talbot (5th), Mark Warren (11th) and Christy Merritt (15th).

Saturday’s stroke event coincided with the third round of the men’s club championships, with plenty of action throughout all grades.

The overall winner of the day was Jason Perry with a fantastic score of 63 net, with the A Grade winner being Spencer McKenzie, who had a great score of 68 net in the windy afternoon conditions, with Scott Mathiske finishing second with 69 net.

The B Grade runner-up was Laurie Shipsides, who scored 67 net, while the C Grade winner was Tommy Wilkins, who had a day out with 67 net score, and was closely followed by Chris Grant in second place with 68 net.

The nearest the pins for the day went to Ross Hastings (2nd), Darryl Domaille (5th), Sam Davis (11th) and Chris Wilson (15th).

On Sunday the fourth and final round of the men’s club championships were played and with three of the grades being decided over the last few holes, it certainly made for good viewing.

The 2023 Men’s Club Championship was taken out by our newly appointed men’s captain and defending champion James McLean.

Although he tried to make it interesting towards the end, James was in control throughout the majority of the day and was a deserving winner, finishing with a gross total of 308.

Th B Grade club championship went right down to the wire, with two playoff holes being required to determine a winner out of Lleyton Mclean and Craig Fletcher (tied on 328).

McLean ended up coming out on top, draining quite a long put on the second playoff hole to snatch victory.

Jason Perry’s great round on Saturday set him up to claim the C Grade championships on 356, coming from eight behind after the first round to eventually end up winning by seven shots.

The D Grade champion was Darryl Domaille, who took care of business comfortably and cruised to a 19-shot victory (379), having found the lead after the second round and never looking back.

Our junior champion for the year, which also just happened to be his first crack at the club championships was Noah Starrs, with a total of 336.

Our seniors champion is Robert Forster, who put together four very solid rounds to claim victory with 321, while the ever reliable Ross Kenyon put him name on another trophy by taking out the veterans event with 340 total.

Thank you to everyone was involved with the organisation and running of this years’ championships and congratulations again to all of the winners.

MURRAY DOWNS LADIES

LOIS Heil featured in last Wednesday’s winners list and again came to the fore in the par event at Murray Downs Golf & Country Club this week.

Playing off a handicap of 43 and competing in Division 3, Lois scored two up to take out the prize for the best score of the day, but only after she survived a four-way countback.

The next best score in this division came from Mary Johnson (36) with one up.

Murray Downs has been inundated with visitors over the last few weeks, with several joining in the daily competitions.

Georgia Macklin (6) from Ranfurly Golf Club was one such visitor and claimed the Division 1 voucher with a score of two up, on a countback ahead of Lynne Bishop (11).

In Division 2, Gaye Legudi (31) and Rosie Ficarra (24) both scored one up, with the former taking the major prize.

Chris Warburton, two up, was the unlucky golfer who had to settle for a ball, with Di Atkin and Pam Austerberry both with one up the next best.

Chris Warburton, Elaine Brown, Gaye Legudi and Jude Simmonds were rewarded for accurate shots to the par-threes by taking home the nearest the pins.

The forecast hot weather depleted the weekend fields, with Melita Sartori (40) 41 points and Norma Everett (26) 37 points winning both Saturday and Sunday respectively, with Dione Heppell (11) 39 points and Jan McEwan (35) 37 points finishing as runners-up.
