The 19th Hole

MURRAY DOWNS MEN

IN Thursday’s men’s par competition last week almost 70 players went around the Murray Downs Golf & Country Club course.

Scoring was strong, with the best score of the day coming from C Grade winner Ritchie Merritt, who found form with a +3.

The A Grade winner was Dale Smith, who faltered late in his round, but still managed to do enough to win with +3, with Ray Power finishing second on a countback with +2.

Barry Lacey’s +3 was enough to claim the honours in B Grade by two shots over Ian Read, who shot a steady +1, while the C Grade runner-up was Tony Wilson, who finished square and got the nod on a countback.

Nearest the pin were David Bourne (2nd), Wayne Such (5th), Graeme Giddings (11th) and Rob Merrett (15th).

A special mention and congratulations go to David Bourne, who defied the odds and recorded a hole in one on the second hole.

In Saturday’s competition there was some of the strongest Stableford scoring in some time, with the day’s best score belonging to A Grade winner Lleyton McLean, who recorded an ultra-impressive 43 points from his handicap of eight.

Lleyton’s golf has flourished in the past six weeks and his scores are reflecting that quite well.

The runner-up in A Grade was Brenton Halligan, who finished with 41 points and won on a countback.

Rodney Bishop claimed the top prize in B Grade with 38 points on a countback to Mildura Golf Club visitor Simon Kelly.

The scoring didn’t slow down in C Grade, with Stephan Cameron finishing victorious with 41 points over Gregory Armsden, who finished runner-up with 40 points.

Aldo Damico and Ian Johansen can consider themselves very unlucky for only claiming a ball prize with their 41 points each, while the nearest the pins were Scott Mathiske (2nd), Gregory Armsden (5th), Andrew Gilchrist (11th) and Ross Hastings (15th).

On Sunday was the RTM Constructions four-person Ambrose event, with a capacity field taking the course.

The winners were the youngest team in the field, with Charlie King, Mitchell Uhlhorn, Hugh Thompson and Noah Starrs finishing with a fantastic score of net 53.5 from their 7.5 handicap. In second position were our sponsors of the day, with Ritchie Merritt, Ryan Merritt, Luke Merritt and Murray Conn, who scored 53.875 off their 10.125 handicap.

In third place was Liam McCormick, Tynan Hywood, Peter Collins and Tate Paton, who shot 54 net from their 11 handicap.

The nearest the pins were Lleyton McLean (2nd), Ricky Wilkins (5th), James Beard (11th) and Lisa Brady (15th).

In Tuesday’s nine-hole competition Tony Wilson took home the winners’ prize with 19 points.

Week six of the nine-hole summer competition came to a close and the President’s Men extended their lead to 10 points over Marlz’s Faves and, with two weeks to go, everyone is still well and truly in the competition.

Congratulations to this week’s individual winner Lleyton McLean, who scored 23 points.

On Saturday, December 9, the club holds its annual turkey and presentation day to wrap up the men’s calendar.

Be quick to get in as spots will fill up fast.

The following day we have the completion and presentation of the Swan Hill Windows and Kitchens and Ampol nine-hole summer competition.

Good luck to all involved and thanks to our sponsors.

LALBERT

ON Sunday the inaugural Cross Border Challenge between the Lalbert and Balranald golf clubs was held at Tooleybuc.

A great day was had by all, with 18 players contesting, nine on each team.

In what ended up a close contest, Lalbert came away victorious by three points, with the final scores Lalbert on 262 points and Balranald on 259.

The nearest the pins were Karen McKissack (Lalbert) and John Brougham (Balranald).

Both clubs would like to thank the Tooleybuc players and club for their hospitality and allowing the Cross Border Challenge to be played.
