Golfers’ long hit

A GROUP of five mates took to the Murray Downs Golf & Country Club course at 6am – and didn’t stop playing until 7.30pm.

Craig Fletcher, Dale Rodgers, James McLean, Brian White and Luke Merritt joined more than 3300 golfers across the nation taking part in the Cancer Council’s 72-hole challenge, known as The Longest Day.

They wanted to raise some money for the Cancer Council and, being avid golfers, decided the golf challenge would be a great way to do it.

Their initial goal was to raise $4000. They had raised more than $7000 with donations still open.

For The Longest Day, golfers must complete 72 holes or four rounds of golf in the day to complete the challenge.

Mr Fletcher said there was great enthusiasm on the day.

“It has been good fun and this is the second year we have done it,” he said.

“Last year myself, James and Brian got on board and this year we got Luke and Dale to come along with us.

“We are hoping to grow it a little more and raise some more money next year as well.”

Nationally the event had raised more than $1.9 million this year.

The challenge started in 2013 and in the past 10 years has raised more than $8 million that helps sustain the research, prevention and support services offered by the Cancer Council.
