The 19th Hole

MURRAY DOWNS MEN’S

Forty players took to the course for Thursday’s medley par competition, with the winner Chris Grant, who shot a very handy score of +3 from his handicap of 19. The runner up was Ross Hastings with +1 on a countback, while the nearest the pins were won by Graeme Mathiske (2nd) and Darryl Domaille (11th).

On Thursday, around 80 players made the most of the beautiful weather and participated in our stableford competition. The A grade winner was Craig Fletcher who scored a solid round of 37 points from his 10 handicap, while Mark Warren came in second place with 36 points on countback.

The best score of the day belonged to B grade winner Geoff Frame, who had a very impressive score of 42 points from his 21 handicap, with John Pertzel finishing as runner up with 36 points. The strong scoring continued in C grade with Uli Van Rensburg’s 39 points good enough to see him finish on top ahead of Peter Ternes with 36 points on a countback.

The nearest the pins were won by Mark Warren (2nd), Anthony Carroll (5th), Rick McNamara (11th) and Ross Hastings (15th).

The winner of Friday’s 18-hole stableford competition was Keysborough visitor William Pearce, who scored 36 points from his handicap of seven. The 9-hole competition on Friday was won by Warracknabeal Golf Club visitor Robert Male, who was victorious with 18 points on a countback.

Saturday’s competition was a two-person ambrose event, which also served as a qualifier for the Champions of the Murray, with the top two teams from the day progressing onto the final.

Winners on the day, with a fantastic score of 58 nett, were Anthony Manley and Neville Brady, while coming in second with a very good score of net 61.5 was Kade Benfield and Oliver Rohde.

Good luck to both teams in the coming months when they play in the final stage.

The nearest the pins were won by Neville Brady (2nd), Bobby Kelly (5th), Allen Woolstencroft (11th) and John Webb (15th).

Sunday was another two-person ambrose event, with it also being a sponsor’s day thanks to Conidi Tiles and Lighting. The winners of the day, with a great score of 59 nett, was Brenton and Daniel Cruickshank, while Andrew and Rob Merrett finished as runners up Brett Farlie and Matthew Quaife finished third.

 


MURRAY DOWNS LADIES

Perfect weather and a pristine course greeted the 60 women who competed in the stableford event on Wednesday.

B graders Ruth McAlister (27) and Judi Lonergan (28) both scored 38 points, with the former taking out the prize for the best score of the day.

Sally Fearn (36) with 37 points and Kerry Gammon (33) with 34 points were the best C graders, while Maree Thurwood (16) with 36 points and Chris Warburton (17) with 35 points collected the spoils in A grade.

Sue Davis, 36 points, Colleen Roberts and Lynne Lawry, both 35 points and Maryann Mathiske with 34 points were the ball pool leaders. Georgina Douglas, Marg Moore, Virginia Allen and Jenice Krahnert hit the most accurate shots to the par 3’s to win the nearest the pins.

On Saturday, Robyn Bett (24) with 35 points, Deb Watson (40) 34 points and Melita Sartori (39) 40 points were the leaders, while Nadine Cox and Sue Davis were the nearest the pin winners.


LAKESIDE

Stableford winner was Deanne Free (26) for the second week in a row with a great score of 40 points, with Mandy Male (9) 35 points finishing as runner up. The ball run down was won by Sue Notting, while the nearest the pins were cleaned up by Mandy Male, who won the Lake Boga Café 3rd, Bakers Delight 7th and J.Foster 18th and Mandy Ackland, who won the HEConsulting 12th.


LALBERT

The Lalbert Golf Club opened the 2024 Season on the Sunday, April 7, with a stableford event last Sunday, April 14. Doug Meehan won with 40 points ahead of James Meehan Snr. on 38 points and Damian Kelly on 37 points. The nine-hole juniors winner was Caile.B with 61, while the nearest the pin was won by Bronwyn.

The NDGA winter pennant season opened on Sunday, April 14, at Murrabit, with the Lalbert Golf Club team having a win.


NYAH WEST

Members competed for the club’s first Monthly Medal last Sunday, with Dennis Pretty winning the stroke event, scoring 85/13/72 on a countback ahead of Gary Farley (95/23/72), with John Manser and Leigh Paynter the next best with a net 78 score.

The nearest the pins went to Dennis Pretty (Goodyear Autocare 2nd hole and Nutrien Ag 15th hole), Gary Farley (Nyah West Pharmacy 12th hole) and Allister Pretty (Rutherford Street Tyres 16th hole). The Country Tracks 4WD eagles nest scored another egg.

This Sunday will be a Stableford event. All golfers encouraged to attend regardless of whether you are a member or not, with everybody welcome to join in and enjoy the game.

VETERANS

Twelve ladies and 24 men entered our stableford event at the Barham Golf Club on Tuesday, where the course was in excellent condition. Thank you to Sienna and your helpers for your support, with the highlight of the day Hank’s effort at the famous Gallipoli hole.

The ladies’ winner was Ruth McAlister, who scored 38 points, while the runner up was Joan Hobbs with 36. The men’s A grade winner was Kevin Lane with 44 points, with Ian Dodd finishing as runner up with 38 points. The men’s B grade winner was Graeme Learmonth on 38 points while the runner up with 34 points was Ray Henshall on a countback.

The ball pool was won by Joyce Boyd, Lorraine Howard, Kerry Gammon, Robert Hobbs, John Manser, Dennis Pretty, Ian Gammon, Rick Austerberry and Hank van de Veen.

The nearest the pins were won by Joan Hobbs (1st and 9th), Meryl Cameron (6th), Kerry Gammon (12th), Ian Dodd (1st and 12th), Rick Austberry (6th) and Greg Gin (9th).

The next event will be held at Kerang on Tuesday, May 14, with a 9am assembly ahead of a 9.30am start. Please bring your own lunch, we will be competing for the Grass Green Championships. Please note that all veterans who played at Kerang on Tuesday, March 12, your scores have now been sent to golflink.
