MURRAY DOWNS LADIES

THE 2024 women’s club championships start on Sunday at the Murray Downs Golf & Country Club.

This year, competitors have the choice of playing the three rounds on a Sunday or Wednesday, with this change allowing for students and women who are only available at weekends.

Olive Spitty has won the last two championships and is in good form after remaining undefeated in the victorious metropolitan Division 1 pennant team of Commonwealth.

Other A Grade contenders will be Jo Watts, Paula Pickert, Lynne Bishop, Dione Heppell and Kristy Gordon, who all may have to be content to play for handicap honours if Olive plays true to form.

Wednesday’s event was against par, with Paula Pickert (15) returning a score of three up, which was the best score of the day and the only score on the plus side of the ledger, while the runner-up in Division 1 was Shelley Wilkins (20) with one down.

Eilleen Willox (25) square was the Division 2 winner ahead of Carolyn Zambelli (27) with two down, while the Division 3 leaders were Tracey Hooper (45) and Glenda Coulter (28) both with two down.

Chris Warburton, Heather Evans, Maryanne Mathiske and Marg Moore led the ball pool and Kathy Parkinson, Margaret Moore, Janette Tucker and Lynne Bishop were the nearest the pin winners.

Weekend winners were Ruth McAlister (27) and Robyn Bett (24), both with 37 points on Saturday, and Dione Heppell (9) 36 points and Lynne Bishop (11) 34 points taking the spoils on Sunday.

LAKESIDE

AFTER a fresh start, the Wednesday golfers at Royal Lakeside Golf Club enjoyed great golfing conditions, which was reflected in the scores.
