MURRAY DOWNS MENS

A SMALL field took to the course on Tuesday for a mixed par competition, with the best score of the day belonging to Glenn Palmer, who took out the A Grade competition with square from his handicap of nine, with John Pertzel finishing second on a countback.

The nearest the pins were won by Andrew Spitty on the 11th hole and Malcolm Talbot on the 15th.

Some 80-odd players tackled Thursday’s mixed par competition, with A Grade needing to be decided by a countback, with Darian Male’s square prevailing ahead of Jason Stevens who also finished square.

Paul Raudino took out the B Grade competition with a solid score of +2 from his 17 handicap, while Robert Hinton came in second with -2.

The best score of the day belonged to C Grade winner Neil Bailey, who had a fine round of +3 from his handicap of 22, with Brett Farlie finishing second in C Grade with +1.

Richard Johnson claimed D Grade honours with -1 on a countback ahead of Geoff McDonald, who also had -1, while the nearest the pins were won by David McCallum (2nd), Roger Walker (5th), Raymond Power (11th) and Colin Mewburn (15th).

On Friday, we held a mixed Stableford competition, with the winner being Penola Golf Club visitor Nathan Williams, who finished with a superb score of 45 points from his handicap of 12, with the runner-up another visitor from the Hamilton Golf Club in Jason Chandler, who finished with 42 points from his six handicap.

The nearest the pins on Friday were won by Will Miles (2nd), George Kidman (11th) and Jason Chandler (15th).

Saturday’s event was a Stableford competition with almost 100 players entering, with Oliver Rohde continuing his strong from with a nice round of 39 points from his eight handicap to claim the honours in A Grade, while the ever consistent Daniel Cruickshank finished second with 38 points.

The B Grade winner was Bob Burns, who found some form as the golden putter approaches, with his 38 points good enough to get the job done ahead of Andrew Halligan, who was the runner-up with 37 points on a countback.

The best score of the day belonged to C Grade winner Christy Merritt, who amassed 41 points from his handicap of 16, while Penola Golf Club visitor Paul Harmer came in second with 38 points.

Joey Higgins claimed the honours in the D Grade competition with 40 points and finished just ahead of Kobus Visser with 39 points, while the nearest the pins were won by Michael Burns (2nd), Glenn Palmer (5th), Christy Merritt (11th) and Daniel Cruickshank (15th).

A medley Stableford event was held on Sunday, with the A Grade winner being Rick Harding, who had a very nice score of 40 points from his 11 handicap, while Oliver Rohde again found himself on the podium, finishing as runner-up with 37 points.

The best score of the day belonged to B Grade winner Conor Wilson from the Kew Golf Club, who had 40 points from his handicap of 16, while Kade Benfield came in second with 39 points.

The nearest the pins were won by Ross Hendy on the second, Lyonel O’Shannassay on the 11th and Jesse Wilson on the 15th.

This Sunday, the Murray Downs men’s Division 1 team will take on Rich River in the final of the winter pennant competition, which will be hosted at the Cohuna Golf Club.

MURRAY DOWNS LADIES

AFTER the pressure of the three rounds of the club championships, competitors were pleased to compete in an Ambrose in fours event at the Murray Downs Golf & Country Club on Wednesday, with Holts Hyundai, Mitsubishi and Isuzu dealers having sponsored this event for many years.

The winning team consisted of Diane Martin, Mary-Anne Davis, Kathy Parkinson (all former club champions) and Noni Domaille, with their score of 67-8.125=58.875 securing the major trophies ahead of Colleen Roberts, Pam Austerberry, Tracey Hooper and Mag Kiley on 76-14.625=61.375.

Third-placegetters were Suzanne McLellan, Chris Warburton, Sue Davis and Kristy Gordon with 61.75, while the ball pool winners were Jan Butcher, Carolyn Zambelli, Georgina Douglas and Rosie Ficarra and Val Hedwards, Lyn Beasy, Gaye Legudi and Janette Tucker.

The nearest the pin winners were Barb Cadd, Barb Clark, Georgina Douglas and Jenice Krahnert.

Barb Cadd made a welcome return to form on Saturday, with her score of 36 points from her handicap of 29 seeing her finish two shots clear of Ruth McAlister (25).

Jenny Lynas, Mag Kiley and Belinda Gardner all scored 33 points to win balls, while Tamika Hogan, Lisa Brady and Melita Sartori all hit the most accurate par three shots to win the nearest the pins.


LALBERT

ON Sunday, May 26, a Stableford event was held at the Lalbert Golf Club, with Danika Meehan winning the ladies event with 38 points, on a countback ahead of Karen McKissack.

In the men’s competition, it was Doug Meehan who finished on top with 34 points ahead of Peter Harley on 33 points, while the juniors was won by Bohden Brown ahead of Kel Parsons, with no nearest the pin winners.

All members please note the Lalbert Golf Club Championships are coming up in June.


LAKESIDE LADIES

ROUND 2 of the ladies championships had Tricia Witney (31) finish with a score of net 69 to beat Mandy Male (10) on a countback, while Sue Notting (25) continued her steady form to produce a net 75 score and lead the ball pool, with Laurel Dewhurst (28) with a net 78 beating Jean Youl (18) on a countback to round out the ball pool winners.

The nearest the pins were shared around, with Tina King on the 3rd, Mandy Male on the 7th, Sue Notting on the 12th and Ruth McAlister on the 18th finishing closest.

Sue Notting was the only one who utilised the smoothly mown course to get a gobbler on the 5th.

The course still looks amazing, with the new mower earning its keep, but some rain will freshen it up and slow a bit of the run.

Round 2 of the men’s championships is on this Sunday.


NYAH WEST

THE Graham Wealth-sponsored 4BBB tournament was played last Sunday in ideal autumn weather and on a course with considerable run, which was indicative of the scores returning with visiting golfers from Balranald, Murrabit, Lakeside, Lake Boga and Murray Downs.

Club members Gary Farley and Kevin Oliver won the men’s event after scoring 51 points, with club member Michael Watson and Chris Grant (Murray Downs) finishing as runners-up with 46 points.

In the ladies section, club member Thelma Watson drew two partners and won the event, with Bev Beasy scoring 47 points and then taking home the runners-up trophy with Mary Robinson after scoring 42 points.

This Sunday is the start of the club championships, which will be played over the next four weeks, with the members best three scores to count.

A reminder that the junior golf development program will again be conducted at 9.30am this Sunday.
