The 19th Hole

MURRAY DOWNS MENS

ABOUT 30 players took the course on Tuesday for a mixed par competition at the Murray Downs Golf & Country Club, with the winner of the day’s event being Mark Warren, who finished with a nice score of +2 from his handicap of 10.

Ross Hastings finished as runner-up with a score of +1, while the nearest the pins were won by Darien Male (2nd), Mark Warren (5th), Murray Conn (11th) and Greg Weybury (15th).

Despite the ordinary weather, the numbers increased for Thursday’s mixed Stableford competition, with the A Grade winner Graeme Mathiske having an honest score of 35 points from his 13 handicap, while Ross Kenyon came in second with 34 points.

The best score of the day belonged to B Grade winner Chris Grant, who finished with a very good score of 39 points from his 19 handicap, while Michael Burns finished second with 35 points.

Robert West took out C Grade honours with 38 points, with Claris Bourne finishing as runner-up with 34 points.

The nearest the pins were won by Lyonel O’Shannassy (2nd and 5th), Greg Daniels (11th) and Mark Warren (15th).

Saturday saw the June edition of our Monthly Medal competition, with Brett Farlie claiming the trophy after finishing with a fantastic score of 67 net from his 25 handicap.

A Grade winner Neville Brady also had impressive score of net 70 from his handicap of five, while Sam Davis finished runner-up with a 72 net score.

The scoring stayed hot in B Grade, with Dale Smith’s net 68 good enough to take out the win by four shots ahead of Ben Smith with a net 72 score.

Northern Golf Club visitor Jack Paynter took out the C Grade division with a 73 net score from his 18 handicap, ahead of Christy Merritt in second place with net 74.

The scoring was again strong in D Grade, with Alistair Ferrier’s net 68 good enough to give him a three shot buffer over Jake Budde in second with a 71 net score.

The nearest the pins were won by James Beard (2nd), Keith Meagher (5th), Ben Smith (11th) and Chris Grant (15th).

Sunday saw a mixed Stableford competition with about 50 odd players entering, with Quinten Graham claiming the A Grade honours after a very solid round of 37 points from his 15 handicap, with Keith Meagher finishing as runner-up with 35 points.

The best score of the day belonged to B Grade winner Geoffrey Brasser with 39 points from his handicap of 34, while the B Grade runner-up was Lance Stobus with 34 points.

The nearest the pins were won by Dale Smith (2nd), Ricky Wilkins (5th), Lyonel O’Shannassy (11th) and Matthew Quaife (15th).


MURRAY DOWNS LADIES

VIRGINIA Allen laid claim to her third Monthly Medal at the Murray Downs Golf & Country Club on Wednesday, with her score of 95-26-69 the best in Division 2, which was closely followed by Glenda Coulter (28) with a 70 net score.

In Division 1, Marg Moore (20) 71 and Maree Thurwood (15) 73 were the prize winners, while Kerry McDonald (71), Cassie Barnett (72) and Judy McMahon (73) were the ball pool leaders.

Paula Pickert used her putter 31 times to win the putting competition, while the nearest the pin winners were Margaret Moore, Mary-Anne Davis, Judy McMahon and Melita Sartori.

On Saturday, Melita Sartori (39) 37 points and Nadine Cox (33) 35 points were the leaders, with Suzanne McLellan and Sarah Clark, both with 34 points, the next best.

The nearest the pin prizes were won by Marg Moore (2nd and 11th), Claris Bourne (5th) and Sarah Clark (15th).


LALBERT

THE first round of the club championships was held on Sunday, with Doug Meehan finishing with a score of 83 to win the men’s scratch event ahead of Dave Doolan and Charlie Kingwill on 85 and James Meehan Jr on 86. The handicap section was won by Dave Doolan with a net 73 score on a countback ahead of Scott Worner.

In the ladies scratch event, Karen McKissack came out on top after shooting 87, ahead of Dakota Meehan and Maree Kingwill on 100.

Dakota Meehan took put the handicap section with a net 70 score and also won the nearest the pin.

The next rounds of the club championships are to be held on June 16, 23 and 30.


LAKESIDE LADIES

IT was perfect golfing weather for the third round of ladies club championships, with Mandy Male (9) scoring a 69 net to win the day ahead of Jean Youl (19) with a 70 net score.

The ball rundown was won by Sue Notting (25) 74, while the nearest the pins were won by Joan Foster (3rd), Mandy Male (7th and 18th) and Tricia Witney (12th), with Jean Youl winning the putting with 20.

Next week will be the final round of club championships, with presentations to follow on Sunday night.


NYAH WEST

ROUND 1 of the Nyah West club championships was held last Sunday and was dominated by Rob Forster, who finished with a scintillating 75 gross from his handicap of 0, just three over par.

That is a commanding eight-shot lead over Leigh Paynter on 83, who is followed by Andrew Flanagan on 85, John Manser on 87 and Michael Watson on 89.

The best net score for the day was shared by Kevin Oliver and Gary Farley with 69, with Kevin winning the Peter Larkings Memorial Trophy on a countback, with the next best being Allister Pretty on 73 and Leigh Paynter on 74.

The nearest the pins went to Michael Watson on the Goodyear Autocare 2nd hole, Gary Farley on the Nyah West Pharmacy 12th hole, Andrew Flanagan on the Nutrien Ag 15th hole and Rob Forster on the Rutherford Street Tyres 16th hole, while the Country Tracks 4WD Swan Hill Eagles nest scored yet another egg.

Round 2 of the club championships will be played this Sunday, as well as the junior golf development program at 9.30am, with vacancies still available for more children to join.
