MURRAY DOWNS MEN’S

A SMALL group took to the course for a mixed par event on Tuesday, with the winner of the day Graeme Mathiske with a score of -3 from his 13 handicap, with the runner-up Ron Munro with -4, while the nearest the pins were won by Ross Hasting (2nd) and Graeme Mathiske (11th).

Numbers increased for Thursday’s mixed par event, with the best score of the day belonging to A grade winner Christy Merritt, who finished with a terrific score of +5 from his 16 handicap, with the A grade runner up Mark Warren with +1 on a countback.

Gerard Moloney took out the B grade competition with +3 from his 20 handicap, while Ron Munro found himself as runner-up again with +1, with the nearest the pins won by Barry Lacey (2nd), John Tripodi (5th), Doug Grant (11th) and Brady Black (15th).

Although the weather was cold on Saturday, the scoring certainly heated up, with Lleyton McLean firing a five under par back nine off the stick to record 39 points from his handicap of two to win A grade ahead of fellow young gun Noah Starrs, who finished second with 38 points.

Jason Stevens claimed honours in the B grade with 38 points, ahead of Ben Smith in second with 37 points, while the best score of the day belonged to C grade winner Gregory Armsden, with a superb score of 41 points from his 17 handicap, with Steven Kerr finishing second with 37 points.

The nearest the pins were won by Justin Thompson (2nd), Andrew Cameron (5th), Keith Meager (11th) and Bob Burns (15th).

Sunday saw the inaugural Whitfield Excavations four person ambrose event, with more than 120 golfers taking to the course.

The winners of the day, with a sensational score of 52 net from a team handicap of 8.5, were Luke Hoga, Scott Mathiske, Matt Harrop and Jason Perry, with Oli Rohde, Josh Gadsden, Carlee Hazlett and Brady Hogan finishing in second place with a net score of 54.625 from their team handicap of 11.375.

Rounding out the podium in third place, with a net score of 55.625 from their team handicap of 9.375, was Brett Farlie, Matt Quaife, Leigh Evans and Gary Steinmann, while the nearest the pins went to James McLean (2nd), Gary Hughes (5th), Noah Starrs (11th) and Jon Hirst (15th).


MURRAY DOWNS LADIES

Forty five stableford points is a great fourball score, let alone for a single competitor, but on Wednesday Val Hedwards posted this amazing score to win Division 1 at Murray Downs by 11 points ahead of Lynne Bishop (11) on 34 points.

Val, who is presently playing off a handicap of 17, scored 80 off the stick, which included birdies on the 7th and 9th holes and seven pars.

In Division 2, Melita Sartori (39) scored 32 points, with Mary Johnson (34) scoring 31 points right behind, while Chris Warburton and Lyn Merrett, who both scored 33 points and Cassie Barnett (27) with 32 points were the ball winners.

Kristy Gordon, Jenny Lynas, Val Hedwards and Lynne Bishop all collected the nearest the pin prizes.

On Saturday, Barb Cadd (28) scored 36 points and Suzanne McLellan (25) 33 points, while Belinda Gardner (32 points) and Margaret Moore (31 points) led the ball pool, with Jenice Krahnert and Sue Davis winning the nearest the pins.

The 51st Golden Putter tournament will be held next week, with full fields to tee off on both days, with competitors from all over Victoria and interstate trying to win the Silver Putters on Wednesday and the coveted Golden Putters on Thursday.


LALBERT

On Sunday, June 16, the second round of the Club Championships was held at the Lalbert Golf Club.

In the men’s scratch event, Doug Meehan came in with 76, ahead of his son, James Meehan Jnr. on 78, with Dean Alexander next best on 88, while in the handicap section, Stuart McGregor won with a net 73 on a countback ahead of Chayse Worner.

In the ladies event, Karen McKissack took out the scratch event with 90, ahead of her nieces Danika Meehan on 96 and Dakota Meehan on 102.

Danika turned the tables however, in the handicap event, scoring a net 70, ahead of Karen’s net 72.

The nearest the pin was won by Charlie Kingwill.


LAKESIDE LADIES

A FRESH start greeted the ladies who enjoyed a day of stableford golf at Royal Lakeside this week, with Jean Youl (17) scoring 33 points to win the day in front of Sue Notting (25) with 25 points.

Tricia Witney (30) scored 24 points and won the ball pool on a countback ahead of Mandy Ackland and Ruth McAlister, while the nearest the pins went to Mandy (3rd), Tricia (7th) and Jean (12th and 18th), with Sue having a gobbler on the 12th and Jean having both a gobbler and birdie on the 13th.


NYAH WEST

DAY three of the club championships only reinforced Rob Forster’s stranglehold on the title, after posting a gross score of 233 after his first three rounds, with the final qualifying day to be contested on Sunday.

The balance of the field who have also completed the three rounds to date, include Andrew Flanagan on 251, John Manser on 258 and Dennis Pretty on 259 are the next closest.

The nearest the pins went to Gary Farley on the Goodyear Autocare 2nd, Andrew Flanagan on the Nyah West Pharmacy 12th, Rob Forster on the Nutrien Ag 15th and Michael Watson on the Rutherford Street Tyres 16th, with nobody disturbing the Country Tracks 4WD Swan Hill eagles nest.

A BBQ tea will be held following the completion of the final round of the club championships, while the club’s junior golf development program will again be held at 9.30am this Sunday.


VETERANS

IT was a great day at Tooleybuc for the stableford event on Tuesday, June 18, with 16 ladies and 24 men attending and enjoying the day, but not the extra man-made water hazards, many thanks to Trakka, Vicki, Kim and Doddy for your assistance.

The ladies A grade winner was Michelle Dillon with 33 points on a count back ahead of Jean Youl, while the ladies’ B grade winner was Geraldine Kennedy with 29 points ahead of Jenny Lynas.

The men’s A grade winner and with the best score of the day was Ian Dodd with 40 points, with John Manser finishing second with 36 points, while the B grade winner was Doug Wood with 33 points on a countback ahead of Ron Schultze.

The ball pool was won by Ian Gammon, Graham Wyte, Graham Learmonth, Kevin Lane, Ruth McAlister, Shirley Jenner and Joan Foster, while the nearest the pins were won by Ian Dodd and Jean Youl on the 1st/10th, Ray Power and Michelle Dillon on the 5th/14th, Doug Wood and Michelle Dillon on the 7th/16th and Ian Dodd and Michelle Dillon on the 9th/18th.

The next veterans outing will be at Lakeside, where the course is in top condition and the lunch is always fantastic.
