The 19th Hole

MURRAY DOWNS MEN

ON Tuesday this week, the Murray Downs Golf & Country Club held a mixed Stableford competition, won by Roger Walker after scoring 34 points from his 17 handicap.

Greame Mathiske finished second with 33 points, and the nearest the pins were won by Ross Hastings (2nd) and Bob Burns (11th).

Thursday was again another mixed Stableford competition, with the best score of the day belonging to A Grade winner Paul Bethune, who finished with a fantastic score of 42 points from his handicap of nine.

The runner-up in A Grade was Rodney Bishop with 34 points, while the B Grade winner was Brett Farlie, who had a solid day out after carding 38 points from his 22 handicap, with Vincent Kok finishing second on 36 points.

The nearest the pins were won by Robert Hinton (2nd), Ray Power (5th), Rodney Bishop (11th) and Leigh Paynter (15th).

About 110 players entered Saturday’s Stableford competition, with scoring quite moderate considering the perfect conditions.

Keith Meagher took out the A Grade honours after scoring 35 points from his 12 handicap, with Craig Burrell finishing second on 34 points, while Jason Stevens did enough to win B Grade on a countback with his 34 points, just ahead of Ben Smith.

The best score of the day belonged to C Grade winner Chris Grant, who finished with 36 points from his handicap of 19, while Mark Burns finished as runner-up on a countback with 35 points.

Greg Waybury took out D Grade with 36 points by countback ahead of Darryl Domaille, with the nearest the pins won by Ben Smith (2nd), Lleyton McLean (5th), Dave Hogan (11th) and Gene Brooks (15th).

On Sunday, the club held a medley par event, with about 90 players participating.

Stuart Patterson took out the A Grade division with +2 by countback ahead of Hugh Thompson.

Heidelberg Golf Club visitor Stephen Circosta took out B Grade with a great score of +3, ahead of Eion Janse Van Rensburg with +1, while the best score of the day belonged to C Grade winner Geoffrey Brasser with a great round of +4 from his 31 handicap, ahead of Tom Hardman in second with +1 on a countback.

The nearest the pins were won by Dion Carmichael (2nd), Luke Rodgers (5th), Keith Plant (11th) and Hugh Thompson (15th).


MURRAY DOWNS LADIES

THE annual Silver Putter event saw a capacity field tee off at the Murray Downs Golf & Country Club on Wednesday, with Robyn Bett (24) and Julie Overall (33) now proud owners of new putters thanks to a great score of 49 points.

Sisters-in-law Melita Sartori (38) and Belinda Gardner (26), with 45 points, claimed second place on a countback, ahead of Lynne Bishop (11) and Barb Cadd (28).

Visitors Sue Vickery, Kerri Lynch and Venita Mibus claimed three nearest-the-pin prizes, with local Shelley Wilkins also successful, while competitors with scores down to 42 points collected golf balls.

On Saturday, Lyn Merrett (26) scored 37 points and Sue Davis (26) 36 points and were successful in Division 1, with Melita Sartori (38) with 36 points and Joan Foster (38) with 32 points taking out Division 2.

Lyn Merrett and Lynne Bishop hit the most accurate shots to the 2nd and 11th holes to claim the nearest-the-pin prizes.


LALBERT

ON Sunday, the third round of the club championships was held, with Doug Meehan scoring 72 to win the men’s scratch event, one ahead of James Meehan Jr, who won the handicap event with 69 net on a countback ahead of Dave Doolan.

In the ladies scratch event, Karen McKissack shot 89 to claim victory ahead of Dakota Meehan on 96, while in the handicap event, Dakota won with a 70 net score ahead of Karen McKissack with a 72 net score and Caitlin McKissack with a 73 net score, while the nearest the pin was won by Karen McKissack.

This Sunday will be the fourth and final round of the club championships, with the best three rounds counting towards the final score. Presentations and dinner will be held at the end of the day.

 


NYAH WEST

THE club championships concluded on Sunday, with Rob Forster reigning supreme with scores of 75-79-75-229 to claim the club title, some 21 strokes ahead of his nearest rival John Manser, who finished with scores of 85-86-79-250.

Andrew Flanagan and Leigh Paynter were the next best, both finishing on 251, while John Manser had some consolation, winning the net score title with 217, just ahead of Allister Pretty on 219.

The nearest the pins were won by Dennis Pretty on the Goodyear Autocare 2nd hole, John Manser on both the Nyah West Pharmacy 12th and the Nutrien Ag 15th holes, and Rob Forster on the Rutherford Street Tyres 16th hole, with the Country Tracks 4WD Swan Hill eagles nest gaining another egg.

The junior golf development program will again be held this Sunday, starting at 9.30am.
