Pro Am tournament a thriller

COHEN MORTIMER

MORE than 130 amateur golfers from across the region had the unique opportunity to rub shoulders with golf professionals on the Murray Downs golf course on Wednesday.

Forty four teams of four, each featuring one pro and three amateur, competed in the thrilling Pro-Am tournament to kick of the NSW Open festivities across two sessions.

The team from Australian Farming Services, led by Pro Andrew Campbell, claimed first place in the morning session with a stellar score of 101.

Campbell said he really enjoyed his return to the Murray Downs course and the event, as it allows him to relax on the golf course.

“It’s always nice to get a win, regardless of if it’s a tour or the Pro-Am,” said Campbell.

“I hit a couple of good drives and put us in good spots, and fortunately, the guys had some shots and we all holed some putts and some threes and fours on the card definitely helped – so everyone played well and did their bit.

“As long as you’re having fun and having a laugh, it doesn’t matter how we play – it’s just a good day for us and to play with the sponsors and give back.

“The more days you play relaxed, the easier it is on game day.”

The format played was Texas Scramble, allowing each team to select the best-positioned ball from the tee shot and each play from the location of the chosen ball for their next shot.

Josh Forster, an amateur from the winning team, said this rule, along with the winning prize of golf bags for the amateurs, was really pleasing.

“On the drive here, we discussed how bad my bag is, so it’s good to get a new bag and put the clubs in,” said Mr Forster.

“It was a great day and I really enjoyed it. Andrew freed up and was bombing some big drives that obviously helped because then we only had shorter irons into the greens.”

Forster, who balances his passion for golf with family commitments, appreciated the opportunity to play alongside a professional.

“I don’t get to play as much golf now with a young family,” said Forster.

“I’ve never played with a pro before, so I wanted to compare myself to their level.

“There’s a massive difference in skill level, dedication, and practice – that’s why they are so good.”
