MURRAY DOWNS MEN’S
WHAT a magnificent week of golf was held at the Murray Downs Golf & Country Club over the past week, with the hosting of the 2024 NSW Men’s Open.
Now that the dust has settled, a very big thank you must go out to all the volunteers, ground staff and club staff for all jumping in and going over and beyond with helping making this event such a huge success.
The reviews and feedback from all involved have been full of praise on the way the course and facilities were presented and with the assistance over 150 volunteers, putting the icing on the cake, helping with scoring and crowd control.
On the local scene, all NSW Open volunteers were invited to play the course on Monday, as it was set up for the final round of the Open.
A Grade winner, Luke Merritt (1) showed that his best is competitive with the professionals, by recording 37 stableford points and was closely followed by Dale Jager (9) and Rob Forster (8) both with 36 points.
The best in B Grade were Rick Austerberry (23) and Rob Merrett (22) who both finished with 32 points, while Brad Cockfield, Malcolm Talbot, Ken Gregory and Luke Merritt hit the closest shots on the par three holes.
In the women’s section, the best was Carol Wiseman (32) with a solid score of 34 points, which was a very good score from the back tee markers.
She was closely followed by Lois Carnie (22) with 32 points and Suzanne Napier (29) on 31 points.
On Tuesday of this week, with locals chaffing at the bit to get back out on the course, the competition of the day was stableford and was played across two divisions.
The day’s best score of 39 points was recorded by Barry Caccianiga (30) who took out second division ahead of Darryl Domaille (22) who finished with 35 points.
Ray Power (9) was the best in division 1 with 37 points, ahead of Wayne Wisby (11) on 35 points.
Ray Power and Darryl Domaille claimed the nearest the pin’s on holes 11 and 2 .
This weekend it is back to normal, with a stableford competition on Saturday followed by the RTM Construction Day on Sunday, with the format being a four-person modified Gentsomes stableford event, with a 12.30pm assembly and barbecue from 11.30am.
MURRAY DOWNS LADIES
GOLF was back to normal at Murray Downs Golf & Country Club on Wednesday, with 58 women enjoying the course that Lucas Herbert made his own at the weekend.
Anne Webb spent the four days of the NSW Open helping officials send out the fields and must have received inspiration from the experience, as she put together her score of 69 net from her 30 handicap to win the November monthly medal, with Ruth McAlister (28) scoring 71 to finish runner up to Anne in Division 2.
In Division 1, Jan Butcher (25) with a score of 71 net was victorious via a count back ahead of Marg Moore.
Virginia Allen, Noni Domaille, Chris Warburton, Paula Pickert and Jill McIndoe all scored a 75 net and led the ball pool.
Marg Moore used her putter 28 times to win the putting competition, while the nearest the pin prizes went to Michelle Holt, Claris Bourne, Ruth McAlister and Carolyn Zambelli.
MURRAY DOWNS DAD’S ARMY
ON Wednesday, November 20, members were back on the course and playing the front nine, after the closure of the course over the last couple of weeks in the lead up to and the successful playing of the Ford NSW Open.
Kevin Maddy returned the best score of the day to be the clear winner with 20 points, five points clear of the next two, Robert Deighton and Damian Kelly on 15 points.
The were followed by Barry Bishop on 14 points, Ray Frame on 13 points, John Brereton on 12 points and Ian Dickson and Ross Cox on 11 points, with and Gordon Parsons on nine points.
