The 19th Hole

MURRAY DOWNS MEN’S

GOLF competitions returned to normal over the past week, with some excellent results being recorded from those champing at the bit to get back out on the course.

Saturday’s stableford competition was played in rather warm conditions, which did not have any impact on John Threadgold (22), who shot the best score of the day with 40 points to be a clear winner in the C division, ahead of Gordon Parsons (24) with 37 points and Tom Herbert (22) from Kyneton Golf Club, on 36 points.

The B division was decided via a countback, which went the way of Brad Cockfield (14) ahead of Max Carroll (18) when both players finished with 35 points each, while in A division, Daniel Cruickshank (5) was the best with 39 points, ahead of Craig Fletcher (11) on 36 and Mark Warren (10) on 35.

Thirty-three points was the magical mark required to get a ball, while the nearest the pins went too Luke Hogan on the 2nd, Alistair Rayner (Red Cliffs Golf Club) on the 5th, Michael Hogan (Red Cliffs Golf Club) on the 11th and Craig Davies on the 15th.

Last Thursday’s competition was a medley stableford event that was played across three divisions.

Geoff Bett (35) got the nod for the day’s best score of 40 points having won division 3, ahead of David Newman (18) from Adelaide, who finished with the same score, to be the best in division 2.

Hamish Macphee (11) from the Bright Country Golf Club also got the nod in his favour for division 1 honours, scoring 38 points and finishing just ahead of Graeme Mathiske (11), who had to settle for the runner’s up prize.

The runner’s up in the other two divisions were Rick Rundell-Gordon (16) in division 2 and Gordon Parsons (25), who was just warming up for the weekend, in division 3, with 38 points. The nearest the pins went to Ross Kenyon (2nd), Ray Power (5th), Jayden Graham (11th) and Glenn Palmer (15th).

This brings us to Sunday’s event, which was the RTM Construction Day, with thanks going to Ritchie, Tracey and family for putting on the event, with the format being a modified gentsomes stableford competition.

The winning team, consisting of Dave Doolan, Luke Doolan, Brad Kelly and Peter Harley, recorded a near unbelievable of score of 161 points, to blitz the rest of the field to win by 15 points ahead of Leigh Evans, Tony Miceli, Gary Steinman and Nathan Dunstone, who recorded an equally impressive score of 146 points.

Finishing third was the team of Tony Ford, Noah Sherlock, Adrian Walker and Kayne Walker with 143 points by way of the countback system, while Luke Merritt (2nd), Peter Harley (5th), Chris Knee (11th) and David Doolan (15th) hit the closest shots on the par three holes.

Geoff Bett (34) has hit a little purple patch and following on from his 40 points last Thursday, continued with another solid round of 36 points in Tuesday’s competition to claim the major prize on offer, ahead of Jake Budde (25) with 35 points.

Darryl Domaille (2nd) and Dale Smith (11th) claimed the nearest the pins.
