The 19th Hole

MURRAY DOWNS MEN

WITH persistent rain tumbling down on Saturday morning, quite a number of fair-weather morning golfers withdrew from their normal round of golf, reducing the field rather significantly and as you would expect, the best scores of the day came from players playing in the afternoon.

Mat Collins (4) and Scott Munro (11) found the conditions to their liking, with both recording 40 Stableford points each to lead the home the A Grade section, with Collins coming out on top via the countback system, with Tyrone Parkinson (14) one point adrift with 39 points.

Juandre Kapp (32) was the best in Division 2, scoring 39 points and was followed by Tony Ford (18) and Steve Kerr (17) both with 35 points.

Other players required at least 33 points to be eligible for a ball, while the lucky shots on the par 3 holes were hit by Rob Merrett, John Webb, Mathew Quaife and Craig Mathieson.

Last Thursday’s competition was against par, with 67 players taking part.

Paul Sheldrick (28) came in with a handicap breaking score of 6 up to take out Division 3 honours, just ahead of the unlucky Malcolm Vawdrey (27) from the Yarra Yarra Golf Club, with 5 up.

They were followed by Austin Paroissien (54) in third with 4 up.

The president, Col Hedwards (16), also had a very good day, coming in with a score of 5 up, to lead Division 2, ahead of Andrew Cameron (17) with 2 up and Mark Burns (18) on 1 up.

Division 1 scores were a lot closer, with Ken Gregory (8) securing the win with 2 up, just ahead of Dale Jager (8) and Dale Rogers (13), who both finished at 1 up.

Scores of square and better were required to be in the ball hunt, with Mark Warren (2nd), Doug Grant (11th) and Steve Kerr (15th) the closest on the par 3 holes to claim the nearest the pin’s.

Sunday’s competition was another Stableford event, with 86 players taking advantage of the fine weather.

Gavan Taylor (11) found the conditions to his liking by recording a very good score of 44 points to be the best in Division 1, just ahead of Jayden Graham (9) with 43 points.

Mitchell Ryan (21) led Division 2 with 39 points ahead of Ross Hendy (16) on 37 points while in Division 3, Cassidy Sibley (26) was the best with 41 points, followed by Jacob Lucas (48) on 40 points.

The scoring was red-hot, as at least 34 points were required to get a ball, while Jayden Graham (2nd), Cassidy Sibley (5th) and Chris Knee (11th and 15th) claimed the nearest the pin’s, with Gavan Taylor and Luke Doolan having to share the eagles’ nest of $90 on the 7th hole.

On Tuesday, Malcolm Talbot (16) cleaned up most of the prizes on offer, taking out the best score of the day and Division 1 honours, with 5 up against par, before also winning the nearest the pin’s on holes 2 and 11.

The runner-up in Division 1, at square with the card, was Ross Hastings (10) while in Division 2, Haydn Downes (37) was the best at 1 up, ahead of Rick Austerberry (22) at square.

MURRAY DOWNS LADIES

SEVENTY-two ladies enjoyed the annual golfers Christmas lunch after competing in a four-ball Stableford competition on Wednesday.

Anne Webb (29) and Lyn Merrett (25) combined with great effect to head the leader board with 47 points, with the mother and daughter duo Jenny Lynas (29) and Tamika Hogan (27) just one point behind finishing as runners-up on a countback ahead of Chris Warburton (18) and Lisa Brady (26).

Fourth-placegetters were Carolyn Zambelli (27) and Maria Noble-Hayes (47) with 43 points.

Jill Bath almost aced the par 3 11th hole when her tee shot landed 28 centimetres from the pin, while the other nearest the pin winners were Jenice Krahnert, Maree Thurwood and Maria Noble-Hayes.

Sarah Clarke (20) scored 36 points and Claris Bourne (26) 34 points to led Saturday’s event after the field was reduced because of the threat of rain.
