MURRAY DOWNS MEN’S
WITH the wind picking up and the temperature dropping, scoring proved a lot harder this week at Murray Downs.
Thursday saw a rare mid-week, two person Ambrose competition take place, with Doug Grant and Gerard Mackay taking out the top spot, with a net score of 65.25.
They were closely followed by Geoff Frame and Luke Doolan in second and their score of net 65.5, with Glenn Palmer and Gary Hughes rounding out the podium with their net 66 taking third place on a countback.
To win a place, a score of 69.5 net was required, with Wayne Wisby the only one claiming a nearest the pin prize, winning on both the 2nd and 11th holes.
One hundred and fourteen players took on the windy conditions on Saturday in a Stableford competition, with scoring made difficult by the conditions.
Adam Hendy (14) accepted the challenge, however, and created a solid 39 points which won both the C grade competition and the score of the day.
Next best in C grade was Harper Wilson (15) with his 36 points good enough for second place on a countback over Anthony Carroll (17), who had to settle for third.
Craig Davies (21) shot 38 points to claim victory in D grade over Jackson McNees (42) who finished second ahead of Luke Phelan (21) in third, after both players hit 36 points and were separated by a countback.
In the A grade competition, Ken Gregory (8) took out first place ahead of Jonathan Hirst (7) on a countback, with both players scoring 36 points, with Gavan Taylor (8) finishing with 35 points in third.
Lastly, the B grade competition was won by Future Golf member Jack Cornelissen (12) who took out the win, with his 36 points being higher than Corowa Golf Club member Malcolm McLean (10) in second and Craig Matheson (10) in third, with the pair both scoring 35 points and requiring a countback to determine the results.
To place in the ball rundown, 31 points was the magic number, while the nearest the pins were won by Jonathan Hirst (2nd), Andrew Gilchrist (5th), Craig Matheson (11th) and Ross Kenyon (15th).
The Murray Downs Golf & Country Club has shot to the top of the WRDGA Summer Pennant ladder with a dominant win at home over the Kerang Golf Club, winning four matches and drawing the other.
Ash Free and Brett Farlie had the strongest results, with the pair finishing four holes up with three to play, while Chris Knee and Mathew Quaife also put in a strong display, claiming their win at four holes up with two to play.
Next week will see Murray Downs take on the Rich River Golf Club at Kerang, with a win guaranteeing us a spot in the finals.
It will also be very lively at Murray Downs next week, with the 23rd running of the Murray Downs Golf & Country Club seniors tournament on Monday, February 24 and Tuesday, February 25.

MURRAY DOWNS LADIES
THE club’s annual Pink Day was on the agenda at the Murray Downs Golf & Country Club on Wednesday, with the event sponsored by Kennedy’s Showcase Jewellers, which also commemorates the memory of Fay Ayson who was a valued member of the club for many years.
Proceeds from this year’s event, which includes $300 from the Golden Girls, will be donated to the Swan Hill District Health MRI appeal.
The format of the day was teams of four, with the best three scores on each hole counted, with a novelty pink survivor ball competition also played in conjunction.
The winners of the teams’ section were Rhonda Barrow, Mandy Amezdroz, Tracy Hooper and Jenny Monahan with 120 points, with the next best, on 114 points, being Therese McLennan, Sue-Anne Beattie, Beth Thompson and Gill Fawcett.
The pink ball competition winners were Paula Pickert, Lois Carnie, Kristy Gordon and Virginia Allen, who were followed by Jenice Krahnert, Tina King, Ruth McAlister and Laurel Dewhurst.
Kristy Gordon collected two nearest the pin prizes, with the others going to Di Atkin and Rosie Ficarra, while Lois Carnie collected eight balls from the birdies nest on the par 5, 12th hole.
On Saturday, Murray Downs hosted a number of players from the Rich River Golf Club, who were taking the opportunity for a practice round ahead of the pennant competition on Sunday.
One of those players was Karen Mose (16), who scored 38 points to win the major prize in A grade on a countback ahead of Sarah Clark (19).
In the B grade competition, Lynne Lawry (26) scored 34 points to win ahead of Avis Shipsides (40) on 32 points.
Our current club champion, Olive Spitty (1) led the ball pool with 37 points, while Karen Mose and Tamika Hogan both collected two nearest the pin’s each.
Cathy Darby (17 points), Jenice Krahnert (16 points) and both Mag Kiley and Marie Cruickshank with 19 points have been recent winners in the Friday Golden Girls competition, with this Friday’s event also being a pink day, with a 7.45am start.

MONDAY, February 17 saw a change in play, with members playing the front-nine.
Coming in with the best score was Ian Dickson on 19 points, with Barry Ingram and Tom Wilkins close behind on 18 points.
Next best was Ross Cox on 17 points, Andrew Millar and Gavin Scown on 16 points, Robert Deighton and John Brereton on 14 points and Damian Kelly on 13 points.
On Wednesday, February 19, members played the back-nine, with Tom Wilkins retuning the days best score of 20 points ahead of Barry Bishop on 19 points.
Following them was Andrew Millar on 18 points, Barry Ingram, Robert Deighton and Arthur Graham on 16 points and Damian Kelly on 14 points.
The weekly winner was Tom Wilkins with 38 points, ahead of Barry Ingram and Andrew Millar on 34 points, Robert Deighton on 30 points, Gavin Scown on 28 points, Damian Kelly on 27 points, Robert Smith on 23 points, John Brereton on 22 points and Kevin Maddy and Brian Devlin on 21 points.

TOOLEYBUC Ladies Golf 2025 season is underway, with all golfers welcome – including beginners. There is an 8.30am assembly for a 9am start every Wednesday.
