Teeing off with mates

YOUNG golfers return to the fairways of Nyah West Golf Club to participate in the junior development program starting on Sunday, May 25.

The golf days allow for friendly competition and skill development, all within a welcoming atmosphere.

The kids learn proper stance, grip, and swing mechanics, before progressing to playing a few holes of golf.

Children enjoy a sausage sizzle and a drink at the end of each session, making it a social morning for families as well.

“It’s always great to see the kids improving and coming back week after week,” program organiser Graham Muir said.

“Some of them have even brought their own clubs and are showing a real passion for the game.”

The program typically runs in eight-to-nine-week blocks, with a mid-year recess before resuming later in the year, weather and course conditions permitting.

During wetter months, when the Nyah West course isn’t playable, the sessions are moved to the Tooleybuc Golf Club.

One rising star is 10-year-old Eli Dickeson, a regular attendee who “lives and breathes golf,” according to Mr Muir.

“Eli hits golf balls every morning before school and again when he gets home; he’s mad for it,” Mr Muir said.

Eli has joined the club as a full member.

“I’ve played golf before, but this program is a lot of fun,” Eli said. “The best part is making new friends.”

Eli even managed to land “closest to the pin” after a 50m iron shot.

As for advice for other kids, Eli said “just try to enjoy yourself as much as you can.”

The program’s success has been bolstered by support from the community and recent funding.

A $1000 sporting grant from the Department of Sport and Recreation allowed the club to purchase four new sets of junior golf clubs.

“It’s great to have extra clubs available for the kids, so that funding has been invaluable,” Mr Muir said.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to join their children on the course, both to assist and to engage with the club.

“Some of the parents bring their own clubs and have a bit of a hit as well,” Mr Muir said.

Nyah West Golf Club will also once again run clinics for students at Nyah District Primary School next term.

Sunday’s program continues through June and possibly into term three, depending on interest.

All are welcome to come along, with sessions kicking off mid-morning.

“It’s affordable, family-friendly fun, and it’s keeping the community active and connected,” Mr Muir said.
