The 19th Hole

MURRAY DOWNS MEN’S

WHILE there were almost 100 players last Thursday ahead of the long weekend, only five players were able to beat the course.

Shane Kelly (23) was the overall winner as he finished with 38 points in C grade, with nobody in A grade having 36 points or more and Bruce Wilson (18) leading B grade as the only player able to better his handicap (37 points).

Tori Ficarra (23) had another good round to finish second in C grade with 37 points, with David Bourne (25) third on 36 points.

Ross Hastings finished with the jackpot on the 11th hole, hitting it just within the metre mark (98 centimetres).

On Saturday, 93 entrants started in the Stableford event, but only 80 finished with heavy rain interrupting the progress of the afternoon groups.

Of those that completed, Bailey Bowd (28) was the overall best with 44 points, scoring 22 points on each nine to put together a great round in D grade.

It was another tough day for the A graders with no one matching the course, while Justin Thompson (14) was the victor of B grade with 37 points and Laurie Shipsides (16) the leader in C grade on 37 points, ahead of Col Hedwards (15) on 36 points.

In D grade, Craig Davies (21) finished second on 38 points and Luke Hogan (37) was third with 36 points.

Only a small group of players turned up on Sunday, with only two players, both in B grade, finishing with 36 points or better.

In the tough conditions, Grant Ford (11) took home the A grade prize with 35 points, while Jamie Knee (27) was first in B grade and the overall winner with 37 points.

Second in B grade was Zachary Caccaviello (13) on 37 points, with a nice eagle on the 16th hole.

The King’s Birthday long weekend meant there was a Stableford competition on Monday as well.

The players who took advantage of the course included the overall winner Dan O’Bryan (30) on 39 points in B grade, while Xavier Sherlock (36) was second behind Dan on points.

The strong winds and intermittent showers made it difficult, with no other players able to match their handicap.

The par competition on Tuesday saw Bruce Wilson (18) finish with +2 and claim the top position on the leader board, while Graeme Mathiske (13) came in behind Bruce on +1 for second overall.

While the conditions were tough for golf, the overall winners were the farmers that saw some much needed rainfall on their properties and here’s hoping for some more in the coming weeks.

MURRAY DOWNS LADIES

THE Murray Downs course certainly greeted golfers with its winter coat on on Wednesday, with fog and the occasional frost patches certainly making for testing conditions for the 43 women who ventured out.

The best score of the day came from Sally Fearn who collated 37 points from her 32 handicap with her good form continuing following Sally’s win in the C grade handicap section of the club championships recently.

NYAH WEST

LAST Sunday saw day two of our club championships played in cold and windy conditions.

Andrew Flanagan has retained his first-round lead of three strokes after scoring 83-91-174 and is followed by Michael Watson with 86-91-177, John Manser with 87-92-179 and Dennis Pretty the best of the rest of the field on 93-95-188.

The daily stroke event went to Allister Pretty with 100-20-80 on a countback ahead of Michael Watson on 91-11-80, with 10-year-old Eli Dickeson close behind on a sparkling new handicap, scoring 103-22-81.

The ladies wisely had a lay day in their championships given the weather.

The nearest the pins went to Michael Watson on the Goodyear Autocare 2nd hole, Andrew Flanagan on the Nyah West Pharmacy 12th hole, while Bryan Rogers claimed both the Nutrien Ag Solutions/Landmark 15th hole and the Rutherford Street Tyres 16th hole.
