The 19th Hole

MURRAY DOWNS MEN’S

SOME esteemed Murray Downs members secured the Division 1 Winter Pennant title in the Western Riverine District Golf Association finals last weekend.

Luke Wilson, Noah Starrs, Lleyton McLean, Lucas Free, and Matt Quaife secured the title 3.5 to 1.5 over Deniliquin.

The majority of the team secured their matches with fine golf, congratulations all.

The other highlight from this week’s golf was another hole-in-one on the 11th.

I’m not sure if was is a case of ‘anything you can do, I can do better’ or ‘like father, like son’ when Graeme Mathiske holed out on Saturday just two weekends after his son Scott had a hole-in-one on the same hole.

Graeme pulled out his trusty nine iron from 127 metres and hit it perfectly to certainly brighten his day.

Thursday, August 14 – Stableford

ALONG with his hole-in-one, Graeme Mathiske (14) also played some impressive golf to take out the overall winners prize last Thursday, with 40 points to go with an ace being no small achievement.

The next best in A Grade was James McLean (3), our 2024 Club Champion, who must be in preparation for this year’s championship.

Jimmy had 37 points and is scoring consistently lately, while Steve Bulmer (13) placed third with 36 points.

In B Grade, Wayne Wisby (15) was the winner with Laurie Shipsides close behind on 35 points and Ross Kenyon (17) on 34 in third.

These three have been playing the Murray Downs fairways for many a year.

Rob West (26) finished on top in C Grade with 37 points, while Gregory Daniels (24) was second with 36 and Rob Merrett (23) rounded out the placegetters on 34.

Saturday, August 16 – Stableford

WE had visitors from Gerringong, Canberra, Sunbury, Coomealla, Echuca and Bendigo join us on Saturday in the sunny, but chilly conditions, but they couldn’t match the locals when it came to the leaderboard.

Brad Cockfield was the best of the 80 players who lined up, shooting 79 off the stick to score 39 points from his handicap of 10.

One of our beloved greenskeepers Graeme Cox (7) was the next best in A Grade with 36 points, with Luke Merritt (1) turning up after not having played for a couple of months and played well, with 36 points also.

Brett Farlie (16), Laurie Shipsides (15) and Justin Thompson (36) were on the podium in B Grade, with Brett taking out the top honours on 38 points ahead of the other two on 38 and 36 points respectively.

In C Grade, Juandre Kapp (29) featured with 39 points ahead of the familiar names of Paul Raudino (18) on 38 points and captain Mick Kiley (26) on 36 points.

Unfortunately, Ross Hendy hit it close on the 11th to collect the jackpot two days after a hole-in-one, so bragging rights were the main reward.

Sunday, August 17 – Par

THERE was a smaller field on the Sunday for the par competition, with visitors almost making up a quarter of the field.

Rob Merrett (23) reigned supreme with +4 at the end of the day and was followed by Ricky Wilkins (26) on +3 and Jorgen Leschke (8), who finished third overall with the lowest of the low markers with +2.

Jimmy McLean (2) had another good round collecting second prize in A Grade (0) and our old golf pro Matt Docking (+1) played well to also finish even.

Tuesday, August 19 – Stableford

ANOTHER strong troupe of visitors were out on Tuesday, with golfers from Ballina, Adelaide and Geelong travelling to join.

Well done to Noah Starrs (2) who finished in the clear at the top of the table to make sure the visitors didn’t take our money.

Noah had 40 points in first place with visitors taking out second and third places.
