Demand for Covid vaccines strong in Swan Hill

DEMAND for vaccinations at Swan Hill’s Commonwealth Vaccination Clinic are going strong, with 50 people in the region per day becoming fully vaccinated.

Swan Hill District Health executive director of medical services Rex Prabhu said 536 people were vaccinated with both Pfizer and AstraZeneca at the clinic last week.

Last Wednesday, two new COVID-19 cases were identified in Mildura, bringing the total active cases in the city to four.

Mr Prabhu said last week they tested more than 40 people per day.

“On Monday (July 19) we had 70 people tested, then throughout the week we had 45 to 50 per day,” he said.

SHDH chief executive Peter Abraham said demand was still high, with more than 100 people being vaccinated each week, with half of these being Pfizer and the rest being AstraZeneca.

“Fifty per cent of the total are second doses – therefore we have 50 people a day are being fully vaccinated,” Mr Abraham said.

Earlier this month, the Victorian Department of Health announced that Victoria’s most at-risk workers and residents could get their first dose of Pfizer.

Ten thousand priority bookings opened up for all healthcare workers and residential aged and disability care workers.

Hotel quarantine and border workers, and their household contacts (16 years and over), were also priority bookings.

Mr Abraham said through the health service’s Commonwealth program, there was a “good supply” of Pfizer available.

Through the state hub the Loddon Public Health unit had a modest supply, and 90 per week went to Kerang with this number looking to increase, he said.

“We expect the state supply will increase in the next week or so, and we’re getting adequate supply through the commonwealth to administer Pfizer to those that are eligible.”

After almost a month long wait, those wanting to get their first dose of Pfizer can now book in.

Earlier this month, the Loddon Mallee district hit the mark of more than 100,000 Covid vaccinations being administered.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration has now approved the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccination for children aged 12 to 15.

The current testing hours for the Swan Hill drive-through COVID-19 testing clinic is 2pm to 4pm.
