Swan Hill kids roll up their sleeves for the jab

BRAVE youngsters have started lining up to be vaccinated against COVID-19 at Swan Hill District Health’s (SHDH) vaccination clinic at Tristar Medical Centre.

Seven-year-old Cooper and nine-year-old Mollie Beard were among the first in town between the ages of five and 11 to roll up their sleeves for the vaccine.

After a swift injection at the experienced hand of infection control nurse Judy Devereux, Cooper was able to choose from a selection of fun rewards including a fidget spinner which caught his eye.

“You might beat me on a bike but I am very quick with the needle,” Ms Devereux said.

Then it was big sister Mollie’s turn and she was just as brave.

Mother Sandra Beard said it was a little difficult to get up this morning – being the middle of school holidays – but it was worth the effort.

The children and their families waited for 15 minutes following the vaccination to monitor for any adverse reaction – which are very rare – before heading home for more school holiday fun.

A forest theme has been used to make the young people feel more comfortable and once they have had their jab they get to place a leaf on a tree in the waiting room.

What has begun as a sparse-leafed trunk is sure to become a sea of leaves with the names of some very brave youngsters as a SHDH spokesperson said there are quite a few bookings already locked in.

Five-year-old Monty Blaby said his experience was great and big brother, six-year-old Flynn, said while he was a little scared he faced his fears.

The two boys said they were very excited about their show bags featuring pencils and colouring books, a reward for stepping forward to get immunised against COVID-19.

The recommended vaccination schedule for most children in this age group is two doses of the Pfizer vaccine eight weeks apart and the Tristar staff can assist families in booking these appointments.

“Being vaccinated protects children and reduces transmission within families, schools and in the community,” Acting Premier Jacinta Allan said.

“This is especially true for people who are vulnerable, such as grandparents.

“We’re making it as easy as possible for all Victorian children to get vaccinated with additional support available for children with disabilities, autism or anxiety.”

The vaccination clinic will run each Thursday following the first session yesterday.

Bookings are required on 5033 9960 or 0429 121 126 for appointments at Tristar Medical Centre at 152 Campbell Street Swan Hill.
