COVID numbers surge

COVID-19 cases across Victoria increased 10.5 per cent last week, with 3319 cases reported.

There were four active cases in Swan Hill, down from nine the week before, and the average daily number of new cases statewide was 474, up from 431 the previous week.

The seven-day rolling average of patients with COVID in Victorian hospitals was 94 and there were 98 COVID patients in Victorian hospitals, three in intensive care.

Despite the increase in cases there has been a decrease in the number of people in hospital relative to case numbers.

The report suggests the increase in COVID cases has been driven primarily by waning immunity and influenced by multiple emerging Omicron variants.

Among Victorians aged 50 to 64 years, 80.3 per cent have had their third vaccination dose and 33.5 per cent have had their recommended fourth dose.

More than 90 per cent of those aged over 65 have had their third dose and 69.8 per cent have had their fourth.

About 70.8 per cent of people aged 16 and over have had three doses.

In the first 15 days of the 2023 booster rollout, 63.3 per cent of all vaccine doses administered were to people aged 65 years and over and, by March 7, more than 3000 doses of the new bivalent BA.4/5 vaccine had been administered in Victoria.

All Victorians who have not had a COVID vaccination or confirmed infection in the past six months are now eligible for a booster.

Rapid antigen tests remain available free through Swan Hill Council.
