Moulamein gets together for men’s health

THE Moulamein community is coming together to provide healthcare resources for men and have a social evening for at the Moulamein Bowling Club from 5pm on Saturday night.

Speakers will start at 7:30pm with AFL personalities Brian ‘BT’ Taylor and Matthew ‘Richo’ Richardson headlining the event.

Health services including Swan Hill District Health Doctor Zeest Naveed, Ambulance Victoria and a physiologist will be available to give attendees blood pressure and other health checks.

These services will also have information for attendees at their stalls for further healthcare.

Moulamein Bowling Club president China Gibson said he’s trying to point out the obvious to blokes through this event.

“I’ve been there and done that with prostate cancer, and the only reason I’m alive is because my wife made me go to the doctor,” he said.

“We’re trying to save someone’s life and have a good time on the way with some drinks and a gathering at the club.”

Mr Gibson said his attitude that he didn’t need to go to a doctor is common in his community.

“I always said there was nothing wrong with me, and I’d go to the doctor one day, and when I finally did, they found cancer, arthritis and high blood pressure,” he said.

“Blokes don’t go to the doctor unless they’re sore or bleeding, so they need a reminder that if they service their machinery, they need to service themselves as well instead of pushing themselves to the limit.

“I’ve saved one bloke’s life in Bendigo by showing him my notes (submitted weekly to The Guardian) about prostate and he was on the verge of being very unwell, and a few other blokes have been to the doctor because of my notes.”

Moulamein Bowling Club general manager Courtney Atkins said the event is showcasing the health resources available locally.

“Our men don’t have to drive to Melbourne to get all their skin checks and other healthcare, we are lucky that it isn’t too far to access these things,” she said.

“We want to raise awareness of men’s health and showcase these local health services while having a good social event for the community to all get together at one time.”

Buses from Barham and around Moulamein are available for attendees to drink responsibly at the event.
