Kerang race day change proves a winner

There were no local trainers or jockeys saluting in the seven races at Kerang Turf Club’s December 30 meeting.

However, the club itself was a huge winner by the time its seven races had been run and won by seven different trainers and jockeys.

Only two winners started beyond 5/1, photo finishes were needed in just about every race, only one horse (Mitchell Freedman’s Tizso Fab) won with clear air on the field, most finishes were within a nose to a long head.

KTC president Darren Connelly said he had been hoping the original nominations might have seen an eighth race added to the card.

But for him and the committee, the most important thing had been the new date for its summer meeting – the move from Boxing Day – was a success.

“We had trainers, big name city trainers, locals, from Swan Hill, Echuca and Mildura, as well as some top jockeys and quality horses, all combining to make the day something a lot of people will remember for as long time,” Connelly said.

“The shortest price winner was Mitchell Freedman’s Tizso Fab at $3.60 but punters looking for a payday had to wait until the lucky last when Stephen Lenehan’s Stocked and Loaded started at $15 and duly saluted.”
