More than one side to duck debate

COULD the Member for Northern Victoria Georgie Purcell (“‘Clear’ need for shoot ban, The Guardian, February 10) please give us all the facts, not the made up numbers, but the actual reordered facts?

Firstly, how many emails did she get supporting duck shootings? She has only pointed out against.

Next, she says hunters break the rules but neglects to mention that more protesters were arrested and fined for breaches.

Yes, the duck season has been stopped in other states but you can still, with farmers’ permission, shoot ducks at any time of year.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a seasonal duck shooter, but I have shot ducks as a kid.

It was a great time to get out and obtain some different food.

I’m for a reduction of bag limits if numbers are low, but real figures show that there are good supplies of ducks.

I don’t live on a river, I live in town, but I have been informed by a local farmer who lives on a water course that the wood duck/pigme goose is breeding up big.

He thinks a pair just at his house has had six to seven hatching so far with 10 to 12 in each.

I am not knocking anyone from their views, all for it, but I do hate it when you only give one side.

James Blunden
