Letters to the Editor

FOUR national and international tennis tournaments, as well as a regional croquet tournament, over the past three months brought more than 1600 new visitors to Swan Hill to experience our hospitality and excellent facilities.

The impressive local organisation of these tournaments, led by the club committee, was the responsibility of a band of volunteers who ensured the visiting players, officials and supporters had an enjoyable stay in Swan Hill.

Visitors were offered many services; breakfasts, lunches, barbecue dinners, transport, practice courts, first-aid, a pop-up sporting goods shop and the mandatory fresh coffee provided by the club volunteers.

The quality of any club courts is judged by the worst courts, not the best.

Several well-known international players rated our courts as some of the best grass courts in the world.

As one Australian Davis Cup player said, “These are better than Wimbledon.”

The All England Lawn Tennis Ground has over 28 greenskeepers, at least one greenskeeper per court.

Swan Hill has 51 grass courts and one greenskeeper, Daniel Gardner.

He has worked at Wimbledon and uses this knowledge to continually improve our courts.

The tennis kitchen teams were ably managed by Noreen Dunster Jones, assisted by Colleen Grant. Our kitchen provided healthy breakfasts, lunches and dinners for players and guests. A huge undertaking.

We would like to take this public opportunity to thank our volunteers for their commitment and time in making these tournaments so successful.

When not eating and playing at our club, visitors enjoyed our restaurants and other sporting facilities.

Their visit to Swan Hill was memorable and many said they would return.
