All care, no responsibility for shared land

I WOULD appreciate it if you could please publish this in the Friday September 6 edition of The Guardian.

I refer to the Friday August 30 edition of The Guardian regarding the “Plant waste left to burn” article where Mr Jochs suggested someone had pushed waste together and set it alight.

The mowing of the old channel area off Wilkins Grove/Gray Street has always been a big issue.

I am aware there are a number of owners of this land, the main ones being our SHRCC and Goulburn Murray Water.

These two owners seem to be unable to amicably work together in maintaining this area.

Back in May/June many calls were made to SHRCC and GMW to have the area mown due to waist-high grass all through and the roly-weeds growing which create a big problem each year being left to blow around all the streets.

The area was finally mown in early June but the thickness of the roly-weeds blocked the slasher constantly and the operator unblocked it and left heaps throughout the area.

I am aware of numerous calls to both of these organisations to have these picked up, fearing what could happen once they dried out.

Well, the rest you know from Friday’s article, yes, they never got cleaned up – they dried out and were set alight on Monday evening.

There are a lot of issues with this land: an illegal track being used to access a housing estate causing lots of vehicles and pedestrian traffic through private land.

As mentioned above, the two main owners seem unable to agree on who should pay for what is needed to stop this.

Maybe an accident needs to happen before someone will take responsibility.
