Kids in harmony with culture

Students at St Mary’s Primary School were excited to share and experience each other’s cultures for Harmony Day last Friday.

Principal Kate Quin said that the cultural diversity of the students at school is something they value.

“We have over 15 nationalities at St Mary’s and we just love to celebrate the cultural diversity at our school,” Ms Quin said.

Several students came to school dressed up in their cultural attire.

Student Ella Squires who wore a hanbok from Korea, hoped students would learn more about Korean culture

“It’s a bit difficult because there are not many Korean people in Swan Hill,” she said.

Student Skyler Martin was excited about representing their Indonesian culture at school.

“It’s an honour to represent our country and it’s a really nice opportunity,” he said.

The day included various activities for the students to explore the concept of diversity and inclusion as well as this year’s theme of “everybody belongs”.

Students explored the theme in their community groups in the morning where they were tasked with decorating paper stars in a way that represented them.

Teacher Archana Patney has been directing Harmony Day at the school for years.

“In schools, we celebrate inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for all Australians from the traditional owners of the land, to those who have come from many countries around the world.” Ms Patney said.

“Respect everyone’s differences. It’s a great day to stop and focus on belonging in harmony.”
