Siblings battle instate junior titles

SONIC Speedway roars into action once again from 6pm this Saturday, featuring the 2023 State Title for Juniors.

Don’t let the junior class fool you, these kids can drive, with many moving straight into sprint cars and wingless sprints when they become too old for junior competition.

Thirty drivers from New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania and South Australia as well as Victoria will compete to earn the right to put VIC 1 on their car.

Sisters Bree and Tamika Simpson will be looking to impress three generations of local speedway drivers watching in the crowd.

Tamika is also desperately keen to beat her sister but Bree, who has finished top 5 in Titles before, may have something to say about that.

Matilda Farrell is a very experienced driver, who has had many close battles with her pocket rocket brother Cruz and be assured tomorrow night will be no different.

Two more siblings will hit the track looking to impress. Allie and Zack Erickson have a history of close racing and will again be going hard for family bragging rights.

Jayden Hancock has been recovering from a broken leg, Jackson Kunny has been finishing on the podium lately as has Emilie Williams and Indi Butcher has been finishing top 5 in NSW.

Current SA 1 and NSW 1 Jaiden Santin is hungry to add the VIC 1 title and is seen as the driver to beat.

The Swan Hill versus Ballarat battle is set to continue in the Standard Sedans class, brothers Austin and Lachie Chivers will be backed up by Patrick Walsh as they take on local drivers Troy Higgins and Josh Campbell.

Locals David Futter, who returns after a few seasons off, and Andrew Edwards in his second race, will be eager to have a good night’s racing.

They’ll all be up against former VIC 2 Wayne Sheerman and regular Trevor Evans in the hunt for the chequered flag.

Production Sedans features some quality drivers, although down in numbers this weekend. ACT 1 Jack Murphy is quick, while locals Zoey Salau and Toby Carmichael both know the track well.

Steven Laidlaw, Jack Bear and John Baker are all known as fast drivers so this could be anyone’s race.

Street Stocks are racing for the “Mallee Masters” title and will feature VIC 1 Dale Morrison, and former AUS 2 Mick Dann.

Local Jack Jordan has a new wrap on his car so check him out, while Dean Whatmore is getting quicker each time he runs.

Hayden Glare won at Wangaratta but will have little brother Lachie chasing him. Expect close finishes here.

Finally, Formula 500s return with Jess Beddgood, Tom Nietvelt, Malcolm Gammon and Michael Conlan renewing last season’s battles and picking a winner here is hard.

Racing begins from 6pm, with a canteen fully stocked with hot food and cold drinks. Entry and canteen are both cash only at the track, which is on the Sea-Lake Swan Hill Rd.
