Thrills and spills at speedway

THE Juniors really turned it on for the Speedway spectators and other drivers on Saturday night, with the driving living up to the fast and furious expectations.

Following three action-packed heats and a B-Main, 20 drivers faced the green flag in the hunt for the Junior Victorian Title, all showing how hard they were to beat.

River Paterson with two wins and a fourth-placed finish, Jayden Hancock with two firsts and a second, and Bree Simpson with a win and two seconds, were keen to keep up their strong heat performances.

Jaiden Santin, Jackson Kunny and Jake Bradley were also in the hunt for the title, having secured multiple top-three finishes.

Pary Das, Tamika Simpson, Emillie Williams and Diesel and Will Fallon all showed they would up near the leaders.

After a free-flowing exhibition of racing up until the final, the action went up a level, with four rollovers, a spectacular nose-to-tail collision and a few incidents with the immovable wall leaving only 13 of the 20 drivers to finish the race.

Paterson became the new VIC 2, greeting the chequered flag just half a second ahead of Simpson, with Santin third just ahead of Hancock and Kunny.

The drivers certainly put on a fantastic show for all the appreciative crowd.

Standard Saloons was closely contested with Wayne Sheerman winning both his heats, while Bailey Sinclair, Trevor Evans, Lachie Chilvers and Josh Campbell finished their heats with top-five finishes.

In a hotly contested final, Sheerman kept up his form and won, ahead of Chilvers, Campbell, Sinclair and Evans.

Although not a large number of nominations, the Street Stocks still put on a good show.

Club president Hayden Glare won all of his heats, while Kane Lloyd, Matt Brooks and Jack Jordan each had seconds, thirds and fourths to ensure a close final.

Glare kept his record intact with a win ahead of the trio.

Production Sedans was wide open with John Baker Jr and Stephen Laidlaw winning their heats, while Jack Bear and Toby Carmichael performed strongly.

In the final it was Laidlaw finishing ahead of the rest.

Formula 500s returned to the track, with Jess Bedggood winning two of her heats and Malcolm Gammon winning one, Tom Nietvelt claimed three second-places, while Nathan Caddy and Michael Conlan had mechanical problems, however Caddy managed to sneak into fourth place in the final.

Nietvelt won a very close final by less than half a second from Bedggood and Gammon.

Racing returns to Sonic Speedway on Saturday, February 24, headlined by the running of the Victorian State Title for Compact Speedcars.
