Whiting can’t be caught

SONIC Speedway certainly fired up on Saturday night with fast, close racing, several rollovers, and altercations with the wall and other cars.

In the Compact Sedans Victorian title, current AUS1 Mitch Whiting looked the one to beat, winning all his heats.

However, Justin Paull was a chance to push him all the way with two wins and a second in his heats, while Nick Parker, Matt Papa and Jenelle Saville placed in all their heats.

Whiting held them off to win the title ahead of Paull, Saville, Parker and Papa.

The senior Formula 500 Series race was wide open after nearly all drivers placed in the top three of a heat.

Dylan Anton and Brian Malone each won a heat, while Terry Rankin and Dale Sinclair were close behind.

Rankin was the first past the past in the final ahead of Sinclair, Anton and Malone.

Junior Formula 500s put on a very entertaining exhibition of racing, showing how keen and talented they will be as they get older.

Unfortunately, neither heat winner Chevette Muir nor Paddy Lewis finished the final as a couple of rollovers, brushes with the wall and each other meant six drivers couldn’t start the final.

Rusty Ponting managed to stay out of trouble to win the final ahead of Koby and Logan O’Shannassy, Aston Rodrigues and Hugo Chivell.

Shannon Meakins continued his good form, winning two of his heats and the final of the SDAV Hot Rods ahead of Tony Green, Jade Ewart, Neil Sixtus and Kali Hovey.

Josh Campbell won a heat of Standard Saloons, while Trevor Evans won the other two heats and the final ahead of Troy Higgins, who kept the car straight most of the night and Campbell and Andrew Edwards.

Only two local Formula 500s finished the night, with Jess Bedggood reclaiming bragging rights from Tom Nietvelt.

The next Sonic Speedway meeting is March 16, when the V8 TRUCKS are back along with a wide variety of classes.

Sports Sedans are into the final rounds of their series, GOSA sedans return, as do the Mini Sprints and JSPA Juniors with a series round.
