GOSA sedans to headline Sonic Speedway

SONIC Speedway returns this Saturday night with GOSA sedans running a round of their Blue Shed State Series and Standard Sedans checking out the track ready for their state title here next month.

Unfortunately the V8 Trucks won’t be in town due to some mechanical issues and fighting fires, although they have said they will be here later in the year.

GOSA sedans are a mixture of Holdens and Fords of six or eight cylinders, with Saturday night being their third of six rounds of their series.

With two sets of brothers in the top positions, racing is expected to be fast and furious, with Tom (current series leader) and Ben Schmetzer (fourth), Daryl and Daniel Joosten (fifth), Marty Bassett, Ross McLean (second), Alex Gouveia (third) all separated by only a few points.

Also in action will be Mitch Watts and Nathan Shortis, who are both quick drivers, while Justin Ebert won the series event two years ago.

Also hitting the track will be Mark Lehman, Billy O’Donahue, Brendan Brewer, Mick Meline and Shane Barkley, while Matt Railton and Thomas Bull are relatively new to the class but are showing rapid improvement.

Standard Sedan drivers will be using this meeting to sort out any minor problems and check out the track in readiness for their state title next month.

Local driver Troy Higgins has repaired his car after his spectacular rollover last meeting, while Hayden Glare is hoping for a change of luck after a couple of frustrating meetings, with Leighton Warburton making a return after a break of several seasons.

VIC 3 Jack Yeoman will be one of the quicker drivers, as will Michael Fleming-Robertson in his V8, with Wayne Sheerman and Lachie Chivers also regular racers in Swan Hill.

Russell Hill, Brad Sheppard and Darren Forrest are all experienced drivers and will be waiting for the leaders to make a mistake, while Tom Miller, Tyson Cull, Luke King, Bailey Hill and Luke Head are all relatively new to the track and will be hoping to sort it out before the state title.

Sports Sedan women drivers Zoey Salau, who was a recent winner at Wahgunyah, and Mia Lamb, who gets quicker each meeting, will also be out to beat the boys.

Brayden Simmons is another quick driver and will be one to watch, while Blake Adams has come out of juniors and is becoming more competitive with each meeting, plus Tyson Gleeson, Brad McNeil, BJ Harris and Michael Brown will be pushing the leaders all the way.

In the juniors, Xander Baxter is an ex VIC 3, so he will be the one to beat, as will Jack Mills, who was a recent winner at Horsham.

They will face plenty of opposition, including Xander’s younger sister Zara in her fifth race, while Rebecca Johnston knows this track well after a recent second placing, with Libby Ahearn also having her first win recently and Archie Thomas, who is in his second year of racing, getting quicker with each meeting.

Racing starts at 6.30pm.
