Moulamein notes 8-4-2022

Yabby races

THIS great event will be held on Easter Saturday in our main street from 9am until 1pm. This is always a big day for our town and our preschool. If you do not have a yabby, do not worry as our Men’s Shed have been busy and they have plenty to hire for the day.

Apart from our yabby races, there will be the egg throw, egg-and-spoon races, dash for cash, jumping castle well bolted down, showbags, lotto jars, barbecue, cake stall, snow cones, market stalls, raffles, vintage cars and lots more. Our NSW Rural Fire Service will be doing a membership drive and will demonstrate how they can cut up a car to save your life.

Moulamein Angling Club runs duck race just after the yabby races. By then, it is beer o’clock for sure.

This is a big day. For more information, to be a sponsor and support our preschool, ring Hannah on 0472 904 724.

Footy and netball starts this week

OUR mighty Swans have their first game this week. We go to Ultima to test the water for the year. Our club has recruited well and we will find out Saturday how well Ultima has recruited.

Well done to all those involved in the mighty Swans this year to keep us up and going. Good luck on Saturday to all of our teams.

Lake restocking

I DO not know why our fisheries do this great event in such secrecy. This week we are getting around 2500 yellowbelly fingerlings dropped into our lake thanks to my friends at the fisheries. This event would normally go unknown if it was not for my spies, who give me great information of what is going on in our district.

By the time you read this, it should have happened. If this great event was made public, we would all start to realise where our fishing licence money goes.

They need a rep in their industry to get their name up from just someone who takes our money, books us for one too many fishing lines and gives us nothing back. They do good behind the scenes but nobody knows about it.

I’m sure I am the man for the job after my dealings with my mates from the fisheries.

Easter bowls

WE have our usual Easter Bowls tournament coming up again soon. On Good Friday we have the Bill Houton any- combination pairs event. Then we front up on Saturday to play the Don Mertz men’s fours. Please ring Kerryn for more details on 0407 800 111.

If you cannot get four fellas together for the Saturday, times have changed and women are allowed in the team. But that is the name of the day, so we will keep advertising it this way at the moment.

Rice harvest full steam

EVERYONE seems to be into their rice. The line-up at our Moulamein sheds is getting longer and the offer to take our rice straight to Deniliquin is getting better to try and relieve the stress on the Moulamein sheds.

I do not get up to our sheds, but according to the talk up there we almost hit 3000 tonnes on Saturday. One more truckload and it would have happened. I think the record is a bit over 3200 tonnes for a day, set back when our shed workers were allowed to do more hours.

At the moment our farmers spend as many hours as they can harvesting. But they are in airconditioned headers, tractors and trucks. Our shed workers can spend as many as 11 hours working in very dusty, hot conditions by the time the last truck of the day is emptied. Thank you to those that do the work to get our rice from our paddock to the sheds.

Macka must have read my notes as to how flat my rice was that he was supposed to harvest. He jumped into the truck and put his brother BJ on the header. I have also been sacked from the rice job as my young fella jumped into the snigging bin job. I am not used to not being involved in something you have nurtured from duck food to harvest. It is a whole new world for me.

They do not give you much information, these young fellas. “How is it going?” I ask. “Pretty good.” Getting frustrated, I ask, “What’s the moister like?” “Yep, OK.” When you go from working on your own for 40 years or so, it is hard not being there. My rice is going OK, and the moister got a “bit green” before my contractors pulled out. We managed to get the big half off so that is a good start. If I knew how it went would be better.

River levels

THE Edward at Moulamein is rising slowly at just over 1.6 metres and just over 1400 megs a day. Let’s hope these levels stay up for Easter. By the look of the river levels on the way, they should. Just depends on how many pumps get fired up between now and Easter. Fish have been quiet with an unusual number of carp getting caught. Thank you to those that give me carp. My yabby bait freezer is pretty full at the moment. Looks good for Easter yabbies.
