Moulamein Notes with China Gibson – April 22

Rain, rain beautiful rain

YOU could not have ordered it better. A steady rain at this time of the year. We have had 49ml at home and 66ml up at the top paddock. We think the gauge was empty up there before this great event started and it seems a lot wetter up there. Thank you, Huey. A great start to the season. I have heard of falls of up to 75ml out in the Mallee. A great start for their cropping program.

Cod plentiful

EVERYONE I talked to over Easter was catching cod. Most were undersize but there were a few keepers and a few that were oversize. There was the odd yeller caught and a few carp. But cod were the easiest to catch. One of my camps on the creek had never caught a cod before. They managed 10. Another camp got a heap of cod, three yellers, a few carp and they recon they got a trout cod. Unfortunately, they never thought to take a photo so we will never have proof. I think the best story I have heard is an eight-year-old with a kid’s Kmart rod hooking onto a 108cm cod. Some mates were boating past when they saw this kid with a rod bent under the boat. They decided to stop and watch the show. It was a battle. But after getting hooked around the motor and a bit of help from Mum and Dad they got this monster into the net. That is a day this little kid will never forget.

Rice harvest stops with a crunch

WELL, maybe more like a pitter patter than a crunch but our harvest has come to a halt for a few days because of the fantastic rain. I think we had an hour or so of harvesting to finish when the rain struck. This rain will give Hooker and his workforce a bit of a break to catch up on those jobs at our rice silos that just cannot get done when there are full-on trucks lined up. Some of the workers may even get a couple of days off. Normally the s… hits the fan about ANZAC Day when a few are starting to finish but the sheds are starting to fill up so the delay to get a load in does not change. This rain will slow the harvest down a bit for a week or so. So, the crunch may come at the start of May. Depending on the weather.

Footy at home this week

WE play our mates from Wandella this week at home this week. Come over and cheer the mighty Swans on. It is always a great day over there and we have one of the best canteens in our league to keep you fed.

More firefighters needed

OUR Moulamein Town Brigade and our Moulamein Road Crash Rescue are a bit short of numbers. They need more members to step up and help out. Our Road Crash Rescue unit has all of the whiz-bang equipment that the big boys have to get anyone out of a car in an accident. Our unit has already helped to save a couple of lives. This could be you, or someone you love that needs this service. Our brigade will conduct a demonstration at our Moulamein Yabby Races this Saturday, between 11am and noon. Come and have a look. For more information, please ring our captain on 0427 963 683.

Permits ended

FIRE permits are no longer required to burn off. Timber may now be burnt. You must still notify your neighbours and if you are doing a big one, you have to register your burn at this website. Not the one I gave you last week. www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify Good luck with that. Someone fed me the wrong information.

Moulamein Preschool Yabby Races and Easter Fair

THERE seemed to be a good crowd at our Yabby Races this year. Well done to all those involved to keep this event going for our town.Easter bowls tournament

WE had a good roll-up for our Friday Bill Houton Memorial event. Everyone seemed to have a good time and this was Knockers’ first win in a tournament. Well done Knockers and Mark and a big thanks to Kerryn for organising it.

River levels

THE Edward at Moulamein is steady at 1.6 metres and around 1380 megalitres a day. Still a good boating level and plenty of cod there for the catching.
