Moulamein Notes

Last day at Quamby for football netball this week

AFTER a week off, we go to our last trip to play our mates at Quamby.

Unfortunately, this is their last year of football and netball as their committee has made the hard call that none of want to make.

I wish our mates from Quamby all the best after this week.

But, this week the Mighty Swans will be seeking revenge for our last meeting at home. If you can, make the trip into the Mallee. The way the weather has been, it will be worth the trip just to have a look at the crops.

District looking good

I HAVE been on a bit of a road trip recently and our district would look as good or better than the few places that I have been. This is good for our district farmers as everything is worth a quid at the moment. If this is climate change, bring it on.

Watch your back

THERE have been a few questionable activities in our district recently in regards to sheep getting out of paddocks when they should not be able to.

There are also 150 odd lambs missing from a paddock they should not have been able to get out of.

They have not been reported stolen yet as the neighbour will check his paddock to see if they found a way under the fence.

We have a special stock squad in Deniliquin and they would be only too keen to come out and investigate if you think you have lost any stock.

They have very sophisticated equipment to help find thieves.

With the value of sheep, goats and cattle at the moment, the temptation of some may cross the line when it comes to the law.

Give the police station a ring for more information.

Water allocations

THIS year’s water allocations have been announced. The Murrumbidgee has 35 per cent and an estimated 30 per cent carryover. So that is equal to 65 per cent.

Our NSW Murray is on 43 per cent and an estimated 50 per cent carryover. With that much carryover, all that proves is the wrong people own the water nowadays.

They are investors, not users. The only good thing is that when we all get 100 per cent this year, all that carryover will be lost.

Could be a big year for rice

WITH water starting off the year at $75 on the Murrumbidgee, local farmers will be doing their sums on what they can grow with a bit of extra water.

Cotton will be definitely on the go north of us because it is worth a quid at the moment.

There will be plenty of sums getting done on growing rice as that is the king of our district on a good water year.

With foot and mouth disease threatening to jump our borders from the north, anything not to do with stock could be a great option.

The disease has now jumped into Bali so that is just too close for comfort. Only time will tell as to how good our borders are.

Somehow the bee mite got into our great country.

River levels

THE Edward at Moulamein is a river that just keeps giving. The Edward is running at over 8300 megalitres at Deniliquin.

Almost 3000 of this is going down the Niemur and bugger all going down the Wakool for some reason.

The Edward at Moulamein has only just gone past 4100ML at the time of writing so we are in for a big river for a while yet.

The fish do not seem to care that the rivers are so good and seem to have gone off the bite.

One decent rain up in our mountains and it will not be Sydney on the news. It will be us. See you on the levee bank.
