Father and sons game
WE’D all like to do it – just one more game if I can play with my son. One of our 1988 grand final players, Ian Shippen, had the opportunity this week to play a game with his two sons – Will and James – against Hay at home last week.
The boys played well and enjoyed their game with dad in it for his brief appearance.
‘Shippo’ did tell me that he enjoyed his five or 10 minutes of footy with the boys before he did his hammy.
You cannot do it like you used to, ‘Shippo’; 1988 was a long time ago.
But we have all done it when we can and it is always worth the pain.
Football/netball at home again this week
WE played our mates from Hay last week at home and we did pretty well. Our Mighty Magoos had a big win.
I have seen plenty of scores like that against Hay, but it is usually the other way around – 22 goals, 22 points against one point.
Our turn this year, it must have been ‘Shippo’s’ influence. I think that gets our Mighty Magoos back in the top four.
Moulamein has never won a Magoos premiership. Our seniors had a good win and are hoping to do it again against the powerhouse of our competition, Nullawil this week.
They can be beaten. Quamby proved that.
Our seniors team has started to gel and we have big hopes this weekend. This could be the last time we meet Nullawil in a home-and-away match as they want to leave our league.
We may see them again in the finals, if they make it. Our B Grade had a win to keep them in the finals.
Make sure you make the effort to support our footy and netball club and get a feed at the best canteen in the league, or we will be like our mates out at Quamby, and we will be gone.
I do not know what happened to the time, but me and my mate, Batman, seemed to find our way onto the mechanical bull before we went home.
I am sure I was on it longer than the video shows. It must have been edited.
Watering started
I DO not know what everyone else is doing, but we have watered our first paddock of cereal and are getting ready to water the rest of it.
Even the irrigated pasture country is starting to turn its toes up around the trees. We just have to work out which pasture paddocks we are going to sacrifice for rice this year and water the rest.
With foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) looming on our northern borders, it could be a good time to lean towards something that humans eat, not clove-footed animals.
I am sure our government just does not realise the consequences of FMD getting into our country. Instant lockdown of meat exports, no domestic market for grain as there will be no feedlots. Can we still export wool? I haven’t found that out yet.
Coming in from Indonesia is a worry, but from what I can find out, unless you cuddle a cow just before you leave and rush home and cuddle another animal, the FMD bug dies.
I am not sure how long it lives on mud on your shoes. The biggest threat that we still have, and always will have, is the 20 or so tonnes of meat products that get found in luggage every year at our airports.
From what I can find out, once FMD is in something like salami, it just goes dormant and you can freeze it, store it for months. Do what you like and it does not die.
It’s ok, you say, most people live in the city so Uncle Leo’s special salami will never get close to a clove-footed animal.
So, lets bring in the goats to a park right in the middle of Melbourne somewhere, let’s go for a picnic, they say. Look at those cute goats, they say. Let’s give them our scraps, they say.
One bit of Uncle Leo’s salami or the juices of it still on the bread, bang, FMD has landed in our great country. No more exports.
Yep, we are a very smart country and that is just one reason why we will be growing more rice and cutting our sheep numbers back.
Get those sheds empty, Hooker. We are back.
More bowlers needed
I KNOW it is an extreme sport as more bowlers die than any other sportspeople, but we need to more bowlers at the Moulamein Bowling Club.
We are one of the cheapest clubs in our district to join and we are also very sociable.
If you would like a social roll or join one of our pennant teams, give Kerryn a ring on 0407 800 111 and she will point you in the right direction.
We are also trying to get our midweek team up and going again.
If you would like a game on a Tuesday, give Lucy a ring on 0418 189 032 for more information.
River levels
THE Edward is running at just over 4000 megalitres below Stephens Weir.
The Edward at Moulamein is sitting on around 3700ML at the time of writing and is dropping.
This should mean less water between the fish if you want to get a feed. If you like the taste of cod, you have just over a month to get one.
