Moulamein Notes

Highest Flow For Six Years

My Crow Eating mates are getting over 53 gigalitres a day flowing over their mongrel barrages. That’s 53,000 megalitres a day. We could fill three of our four rice sheds at Moulamein with that much water and they are watching it flow out to sea every day. And it will keep doing this for weeks to come yet without any more rain as our weirs are that full that we have to just let the water go. they are probably still whinging that us rice growers up in the Riverina take all their water. The Crow Eaters are sitting on their usual 100 per cent. Our mates in Victoria have got 100 per cent. NSW Murray have got 49 per cent and us on the Murrumbidgee have got 41 per cent. After the last lot of rain up top, I think this will change. The NSW Murray will almost have to go to 100 per cent. But because of the way the water works in our Murrumbidgee system, we should go to around 55 per cent. The good news is, we have supplementary water for the length of the Murrumbidgee and will have for weeks to come yet. That is just one reason we will be growing more rice this year. Get it while you can or watch it flow to the Crow Eaters. How are those sheds going, Hooker? Have you got them empty yet?

Last game And Last Ball at the Hall

Our Mighty Magoos had a loss last week against Ultima. Unfortunately, our Mighty Magoos’ final season is over. Bugger. Our seniors had a good win and has cemented their spot in the four. The cement is now dry so we can start working on the finals after this week. Unfortunately, our Under 14 netballers almost made the finals but got pipped at the post. Our B Grade netballers can still make the finals if they win this week. We have our last home and away match this week at home against our mates from Wandella. This is the last home and away game and the last game for the year at home. Come over and cheer our B Grade netballers on to a victory to make the four and check out the potential of our Senior team to go well in the finals. Also, you can get a feed out of the best canteen in our league. Hope to see you there. After the game, for those of you that love loud music and dancing, our Moulamein Footy-Netball Club is running their “Last Ball In The Hall”. Moulamein Town Hall’s future is looking a bit grim but our Moulamein Footy-Netball Club has bigger and better plans for next year’s ball. Watch this space. If you look at the other side. If you ever wanted to demolish a hall. have a footy function in it. That could be a lot of fun. I do not know what is happening to our Moulamein Town Hall after this function. But it does not look good. Come to the “Last Ball In The Hall” and be a part of history and have a bloody good time. Unfortunately, I cannot be there as I have a 60 plus one birthday party in Barham. COVID cancelled the 60th last year. Just what I need in my 60s. Loud music and dancing in the town hall. Thanks Jenny, you got me out of that one.

Business security

This is a joint initiative of our Best Wool, Best Lamb Group and Western Murray Land Improvement Group. With foot and mouth disease lurking off our northern borders, this night will discuss the importance, the risks, and the implications of all biosecurity outbreaks. This night will help you minimise the disruptions to your business and show you the tools available to protect our national livestock industry. This night is open to ALL businesses, not just farmers. It’s at the Swan Hill Club 5/17 McCallum St Swan Hill, on Monday, August 15. Tickets are $20 and you can book in from 6-30pm and the night will kick off at 7pm. Bookings are essential. Please ring Rick on 0428372357 or Kath on 0354531577 for more information or to book in.

Ute stolen

It looks like even our great little town of Moulamein is not safe from scum buckets that think they have the right to other people’s property. This ute was taken from a backyard in the middle of the day in Moulamein. I think it was found out the Wanganella Road the next day. Even though it is Moulamein, you should always take your keys out of your vehicle as we do not know who is poking around.

River levels

The Edward at Moulamein is sitting on around 2.5 metres and around 3000 megalitres a day at the time of writing and is dropping very slowly. This will change in the next few days and our Edward will start to rise again. They have started releases from Dartmouth Dam as it sits at 97 per cent. It went up 2 per cent in a week. Dartmouth very seldom does that; it is a very big dam with a relatively small catchment. Hume is already full. Anything more than a heavy dew up there and we will have a flood in our Murrumbidgee system. Burrinjuck Dam went from 89 per cent to 102 per cent in one day. Eventually getting to 105 per cent before starting to drop. It is dropping slowly and is around 100 per cent at the time of writing. We have a good flush coming down our Murrumbidgee system that will flow into our Billabong that could equal 2016. But it is only a flush. Nothing behind it yet. This should get our fish breeding. The forecast is to keep raining and the blow flies have already started to move into the dags on the sheep. Keep an eye on your sheep. It has been a few years since we have had a fly wave. This could be the one we do not want.
