Boat having a float

River to rise

I THOUGHT it was just a myth that the Murray River could flow backward when the Goulburn River flooded. It happened last week.

Even though the Murray is at full flow, the Goulburn managed to push it backwards into the Barmah Forest for a while.

Unfortunately, for Moulamein and district, this pushes more water down our river system of the Wakool, Niemur and Edward rivers.

It is still hard to tell what this is going to do to us but we may see almost 2016 levels reached here in early November.

Prepare for at least that level until we can find out more.

Our Billabong Creek has reached 2016 levels above the Edward backup. Still only a few thousand megs. If this rain that we keep getting lands in the wrong place, anything can happen.

Once again, watch this space.

Runaway boat

I GOT a call this week that a boat was floating down the Edward past Mooloomoon Woolshed. Only just floating.

It was put onto the Moulamein Buy Swap And Sell to try and find an owner. Let’s hope someone picked it up.

Division four back on top

AFTER a very tight game, division four bowls took out the chocolates by one point.

One rink up, one rink down. Just enough to hold top spot.

Division one was not so fortunate and went three rinks down to Swan Hill.

Both teams away this week so it will be a good bus trip.

RFS keeping our town dry

OUR local Rural Fire Service has been helping our council workers in pumping water over the bank when we have a rain event.

With almost 100mm falling in Moulamein this week, it was all hands on deck to get the water levels down again.

Well done to all those involved in keeping our town dry when the river is too high for it to drain away.

Show and shine

OUR Moulamein Car Club had a very successful show and shine day at Moulamein last Sunday.

There were plenty of polished up treasures as well as tables full of just what you have been looking for but could not find anywhere.

I think a good day was had by all.

Gallery photo competition

I THINK there were about 80 photos entered this year.

They will be put up and judged this week.

Call into the Moulamein Gallery for a coffee, cake and a look.

You may decide you could do better and give it a go next year.

Let’s try shearing again

WELL, the shed was full of sheep again.

But with the way the rain came down and the wind was blowing, they would have gotten a bit too damp to shear.

They are a lot dryer than their mates outside with 80mm over them.

They have been let out for a feed and a quick drying and back in the shed as quickly as I can find some shearers to do them.

Just got to get the yards dry now.

We managed to keep all of the rams dry. The shearers may not be happy about that.

This will be eight weeks of shearing. If it does not stop raining soon, we will have to run them back in for crutching as soon as we get the last sheep shorn.

River levels

THE Edward at Moulamein is sitting on around 5.33 metres and around 13,000ML a day at the time of writing.

The Goulburn can have an impact in Moulamein we have found out this week and the Edward has jumped up to over 65,000ML a day at Deniliquin.

That is a 27,000ML rise in three days. Still below 2016 levels at the time of writing.

I have always said in my notes that I can read what is coming down the Murray, but the Goulburn River influence is unknown to me.

I am on a steep learning curve. Below Stevens Weir has gone up almost 7000ML a day for the three days.

Remember, all of this water does not come through Moulamein. The higher it gets, the more goes down the Niemur and the Wakool river systems.

Maybe 2016 levels in November – we will find out in the next few days.

At least get prepared for that level. We lift our first pump motor out tomorrow because of the rising water levels. Do not panic just yet, but be prepared. Anything can happen in a year like this.
