Moulamein Notes

Doreen does district proud

OUR Moulamein Bowling Club legion Doreen Weaver has just taken out the over 60s regional championship. I think the next level is state.

Well done, Doreen. You have done our club and our district proud.

Rowdy steps up

OUR little mate Donald Willox, known as “Rowdy” around our Moulamein Footy-Netball Club, has taken on the job of chairman of the board of the Golden Rivers Footy League.

Well done Rowdy and good luck in your new position.

Our biggest loss in the Moulamein Footy-Netball Club is you stepping up to the next level.

Division 4 keeps top spot

OUR Division 4 mob took the long drive to Manangatang this week and managed to keep their winning form going.

Division 1 was not so fortunate against our mates from Lake Boga. One rink up. Two rinks down. Down overall.

Do not give up on Division 1 yet. They still have a mathematical chance of making the four. All they have to do is beat the three teams above them by three rinks each day and they are in. Walk in the park I think. Division 1 away this week. Division 4 finally at home. Come over and check out our champions.

Truck rollover

THIS did not happen in Moulamein but when I was in Deniliquin last week.

A truck loaded with sheep tipped over as it was coming off the bridge.

By the look of the scene many hours later, it would have been a full-on job saving sheep and getting the live ones somewhere safe in the middle of town.

What has bread this year

WE have been through a fair list of what has bread this year but we have not mentioned the turbo chooks.

I think they are called black swamp hens, poo cacklers, or something like that. But in our rice industry they are called turbo chooks because of their ability to take a full shotgun round, hit the ground and get up and run away.

My young mate BJ Booth was talking about them last time we had trouble with them.

He gets a bit excited my mate BJ. He was telling me many years ago in his excited way, “You shoot them. They roll over and get up and run away. They are like chooks that are turbo powered. They are Turbo Chooks.”

And that name has stuck. Up until this year. I had never seen a baby turbo chook. I just thought they divided like cells and kept multiplying.

This year I have seen more baby turbo chooks than I ever want to remember. There are now thousands of them in our district and they love to eat rice crops.

They also love to run across the road in front of cars. It reminds me of those Space Invader games that we used to have.

They are quick and hard to get but I finally got one today. They go off with a pop when you can finally get one. You that do not want to run over them.

My best advice is to aim at them as they are hard to get and if you try and dodge them. Pop, you will get one.

Fishing report

A FEW carp. A good cod landed upstream of Moulamein.

There is that much food in the rivers for our native fish at the moment they would all be asleep under a log.
