Bowlers’ shot at glory

OUR bowling club’s Division 4 mob kept up their winning last week to go straight into the grand final this week at Racecourse against Lake Boga.

I think there has only been one-point difference in their scores all year so this should be a great game.

If you are in Swan Hill next Saturday, come down and cheer them on.

There will be a bus running. It will only cost you $5 for the trip over and back. I think I managed to be the volunteer bus driver for the day.

Come over and support our Division 4 mob if you get a chance.

Bowlers get first chance to get onto the bus. Then it will be first in, best dressed.

Get your name in early if you want a ride.

Swan Hill Truck Service Fishing Competition

OUR Moulamein Football Netball Club’s fishing classic is on the Labour Day long weekend of March 11-12.

This is always a big weekend for our town and the clubs.

Even though the fishing has been a bit on the ordinary side since the floods, most of our crowd only come for the feed that they get at this competition.

There will be fish biting, but maybe not as many as usual.

If you want some fun, bring small hooks and you may get plenty of carp to keep you amused.

The cod are still there, but with the amount of carp in the rivers, I do not think they are very hungry.

If the natives are not biting, you may get the major prize by catching a 35cm yeller or a 55cm cod.

Bigger is not always better when natives are scarce.

Football and netball training

I SEE them running around in their pre-season training.

It looks painful, but I used to love it before I got old.

Not the training, but the being part of a team is just a great feeling.

You are all suffering, but that is what you do to get fit.

It could be the year of the Swans as our mates from Nully have moved on and the Mighty Swans were the second best side last year.

Our netballers have also recruited well and they will be right up there now Nully has left the building.

There is still plenty of room on our Mighty Swans bandwagon if you would like to join us.

Baldy coots

WHERE do they come from? There have been thousands of these birds turn up in our district in the last month.

They are worse than blow flies in the sheep.

You cannot jet for these bloody things, only lead stops them.

After a few rounds on the bike, they get smart.

We have tried a drone over them so they think it a bird of prey so they should not fly. Another theory gone.

Maybe they are attracted to the army grubs that are eating the heads off our rice. Could work. Spray the grubs and the coots move on.

We will find out soon.

The only cure at the moment is that the more lead you put into the air, the fewer coots you have.

Check for mice

I WAS told by my agronomist today that army grubs are not a problem in the rice yet, but there is a bit of mice damage.

I saw a bit of damage by something the other day.

But there seemed to be no mice holes in the banks. I just have to remember how I used to bait the bloody things.

I can remember throwing out my mouse baiter just the other day, or a couple of years ago.

Let’s hope I threw it into the second chance pile.

Has anyone got a good design as I can only just remember how I built it?

River levels

I HAVE not bothered to put these in for a while as they would have been pretty boring after a record flood.

Our Edward is sitting on about 1600 megalitres a day and around 1.75 metres.

Stevens Weir is below 700ML at the moment. Our Billabong is still delivering a few hundred megs a day.

But, with the autumn watering season about to start up, I can only predict that our rivers will go to rock-bottom.
