Division 4 win the grand final

OUR Division 4 mob kept up their winning last week to take out the big one. Well done to all involved. As I was driving the bus, there were a few comments about how big of a night it would be when we got home. I said for a joke that they would all be home in bed by 9 o’clock.

We arrived home to a great feed cooked by our club chief Andrew and his crew. Even the president opened his moth-bitten wallet and shouted a few drinks. Yep.

I left the club at five to nine, with the second last bowler still standing. They just could not do it like they used to when they won the footy grand finals.

You all now have a medal around your necks that not many people get. Well done.

The bowler that was still standing at 9pm still had his medal around his neck at the Sunday Barrel. I can only assume he went home.

From what I can gather, he has a cupboard half-full of runner-up trophies. This is the first winner’s trophy to go on the other side. Well done Rooster.

Fishing competition

OUR Moulamein Football Netball Club’s fishing classic will be happening again this weekend, the Labour Day weekend in Victoria, Saturday and Sunday.

This is always a big weekend for our town and the footy-netball club. Even though the fishing has been a bit on the ordinary side since the floods, most of our crowd only come for the feed they get at this competition.

If you want some fun, bring small hooks and you may get plenty of carp to keep you amused. The cod are still there, but with the amount of carp in the rivers, I do not think they are very hungry.

If the natives are not biting, you may get the major prize by catching a 35cm yeller or a 55cm cod. Bigger is not always better when natives are scarce.

Check for mice

I WAS told by my agronomist today that army grubs are not a problem in the rice yet, but there is a bit of mice damage.

I saw a bit of damage by something the other day, but there seemed to be no mice holes in the banks.

I just have to remember how I used to bait the bloody things. I can remember throwing out my mouse baiter just the other day. Or a couple of years ago. Let’s hope I threw it into the second chance pile. Has anyone got a good design as I can only just remember how I built it.

Free sand

I HAVE started to deliver free sand around our town. I got rid of 28 pallets today. That leaves just over 100 to go.

If you just want to go up and grab a few sand bags, please take the ones that are on the spilt pallets. This will save us picking them up. Take as many as you need, then come and get some more. If the time suits I can load trailers or even trucks to get rid of them.

Southern bell frogs

I KNOW I go on about these creatures a bit, but they are supposed to be in the top 100 list of endangered species in our great country.

It is getting to the stage on some nights that I give up dodging them as I go around the water because there are just too many of them. They are getting very big as well.

I have always said that they can get up to 10cm. I started to worry that I might be stretching the truth a bit, but not now. They are big buggers.

This may not be good news for other frogs that are of a bit smaller variety as these fellas are a bit partial to eating other frogs. Not a bad night out for the girls. Pick a small mate. Do the job then you get a feed.

River levels

OUR Edward is sitting on about 1100 megs a day and about 1.4 metres. Stevens Wier back to above 1100 megs at the moment and rising. This just might get here in time for our fishing competition.

Our Billabong is still delivering a few hundred megs a day, but with the autumn watering season about to start up, I can only predict that our rivers will stay low.

With the Darling River supplying our crow-eating mates, all that has to go down our rivers is what we need to survive and irrigate with. Check your boat, check your pump. It will be low summer levels for our rivers from now on.
